For this, it's necessary a critical analysis of the classic national historiography, in particular those authors (like Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and Caio Prado, Jr.) who most inspired late-20th-century and early-21th-century environmental historians. This lineage of thought identified as the "notion of the ecological wastefulness of colonial economy" has been challenged in recent years by some scholars who assume a more interactivist and anthropocentric position. We defend it is in these terms that Environmental History should renegotiate the dialogue with the various sorts of political-ecological activism.

We offer three independent narrative experiments centring nonhuman organisms and things and their power to shape human lives, institutions, and documents. Focusing on ants, mosquitoes, and plankton, these stories put Brazil's early modernity (1850–1950) into perspective, highlighting the immersion of humans in a wider world of agentic beings and things. Our approach emphasizes the uniqueness of individual experiences engendered by the randomness and contingency of a multitude of unexpected encounters with other-than-human entities. We conclude by tracing the broad outlines of a historical approach capable of narrating and explaining Brazil as a more-than-human political community.

Using as empirical background the timber exploitation of colonial era, the author searches to legitimate its validity as a geographical entity integrator of a natural process the draining of superficial waters , and a mode of extraction socially and historically determined. Thus, emerges the concept of timbering basins. It is shown that the greater basin in Rio de Janeiros captaincy both in territorial range terms, and production level was the one around the Macacu river, that drains all the northeastern portion of Guanabara hydrographic region.

Taking a 11 fragments sample, two types of procedures were applied: interpretation of three sets of aerial photographs (1969, 1976 and 1996) and characterization (through field survey and bibliography) of current human settlement patterns on the edge of fragments, as well as historical process that have shaped them. We have found two main deforestation patterns: one created by large farms and another created by small rural properties and home sites frequently used as amenity values. In the first, the remnants are surrounded by plantations, pasture and minor rural roads; in the second, by houses and small gardens. Both patterns resulted in the confinement of the forest on altitudes above 100 meters, producing a landscape-scale process of multi...

There is a growing tendency to recognize that, once “left alone”, human modified ecosystems do not return to their primitive state. Recently, this notion has been radically advocated by a group of ecologists who propose the concept of “emerging” or “novel” ecosystems. Emerging ecosystems are the direct result of either intense human modification of preserved ecosystems or the abandonment of established land uses (crops, pastures, planted forests etc.). These ecosystems present locally unprecedented patterns of species composition and dominance that don’t depend on human intervention for its maintenance. Therefore these novel ecosystems “exist as a non-regressive consequence of human activity”.

It is argued that, under the religious and philosophical influence of Judeo-Christianism, Western civilization has built their cultural identity around the idea of crea - tion, especially from the European Renaissance onwards. Transposed from the divine to the sublunary realm, this "creationism" portrays the world as a unilateral product of human action - since it is the only creature in the animal kingdom driven by a conscious reason. Environmental historians, on the other hand, start out from a decentralized conception of agency to defend the principle that humans participate rather than create; the creativity lies in the encounters and relationships they establish and not in humans themselves. The challenges of the early decades of the 21st century relate to the survival of humanity as a s... more The challenges of the early decades of the 21st century relate to the survival of humanity as a species. While the covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated a global-scale awareness of the limits of human life on Earth, climate change has for long been putting to the fore the interactions between social, cultural and natural processes. In this context a whole new understanding of the essence and role of Borders, in its multiple dimensions, needs to be brought into focus, and include as well the notions of physical boundaries and territorial control. In this sense, the definition of the Anthropocene as a stage in the history of the Earth entails a radical reshaping of the traditional chronological divisions based on a vision of human history disconnected from nature and reduced to the account of social and technological change. Redefining the idea of border in its multiple dimensions, in present days and through history, becomes of critical importance. Political and geographic frontiers require attention too. Up until the covid-19 crisis, national frontiers seemed to be on a vanishing process: in the post-Cold War world, mass media and popular culture have favoured a narrative of the world open to synergic interconnections. However, this view of globalization has always presented an incomplete picture of reality. Borders, although dispersed and controlled through their constant shifting and movement, may have indeed proliferated rather than disappear, whilst becoming more resistant to particular activities and peoples. Additionally, the boundaries of human society require renewed critical approaches on issues of gender, class, ethnicity, religious beliefs or ideology. Instituted forms of dehumanization, animalization or reification relate to the establishment of social and cultural frontiers throughout history. A focus on the divisions, intersections and hierarchies between human and non-human species, animals, plants and minerals is of paramount importance. Finally, rethinking the traditional, culturally mediated relations between beings and objects demands a thorough disciplinary critique.
