- The "Giant Purple Griffin" is a piece of Decepticon technology from the cartoon portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
The Giant Purple Griffin was one of the original Megatron's most awesomely ridiculous creations: a giant flying building shaped like a griffin. The Giant Purple Griffin had a mane of prehensile tentacles that could be used to grasp at opponents.

The Transformers cartoon
During an operation in the Middle East, the Decepticons helped local malcontents secretly overthrow the legitimate ruler of an unnamed nation in exchange for oil. As part of this operation, the Decepticons used a Giant Purple Griffin. It was unclear exactly what Megatron planned to do with the Giant Purple Griffin (aside from the obvious "conquest"). He was able to use a couple of lasers in its beak to shoot at the Aerialbots a little bit. Later, Rumble and Frenzy made the griffin fly around a little bit, and Slingshot got tangled up in its mane hair stuff. The griffin managed to shoot Superion, knocking him over, but the combiner gave the griffin a good swift kick, which caused it to crash and seemingly put it out of commission. It was presumably destroyed in a giant oilfield explosion a moment later, triggered by the Aerialbots. And so endeth the saga of the Giant Purple Griffin. Aerial Assault
Notes
- The name, "Giant Purple Griffin", is fan-created, as neither Megatron nor any other character ever referred to the device with a proper name, calling it simply "the fortress" or "the griffin". Many fans also refer to it as the Big Blue Griffin, 'cuz, hey, alliteration.
- The AllSpark Almanac II shows a version of the griffin with pickles for wings as a mascot for Burger Bot. His name here was Pickles.
