The Battle of the Star Gate
Makoto was a member of the four-man team working on the construction of the Trigger, an interstellar teleportation system housed in a space station and jointly developed between the Autobots and the United States government. When Optimus Prime announced the existence of the Trigger to the world in a press conference, Makoto watched the footage over and over for three days, bemoaning the way it seemed like he would never get to use the Trigger to go to Cybertron himself. He started arguing with his crewmate Trov when he joked that the Autobots mights be marauding space monsters, but they were both silenced by their commanding officer Flegg, who thrilled Makoto with the news that the Autobots would soon be arriving for the Trigger's test run. Makoto's elation was fleeting, however, as an unidentified object suddenly began approaching the station. The craft was Astrotrain, and the Decepticons who emerged from within him attacked, killing Flegg and the fourth crew member Anya. Horrified and confused, Makoto turned to Trov, only to find him pointing a pistol in his face. Trov revealed that he was an agent of a foreign power that was angered by the Autobots' exlclusive alliance with America, and which had in turn formed an allegiance with the Decepticons in order to take control of the Trigger. Makoto was able to wrestle the gun from Trov's grip, but Trov punched him into a bulkhead and knocked him unconscious.
When Makoto awoke a short time later, Trov had gone to welcome Megatron and the Decepticons aboard the Trigger, but as Makoto watched over a viewscreen, Megatron announced his refusal to share power and murdered Trov. Acting quickly, Makoto activated the Trigger's electromagnetic launch systems and blasted Decepticons down the machine's "barrel", intending to shoot them through the warp gate at the end and set them adrift in the far reaches of space. Alas, Megatron was able to shoot out of the warp gate and deactivate the Trigger before that could happen, and the furious Decepticon leader immediately turned his attention to Makoto. Thankfully, mere seconds before Megatron could shatter the glass of the control room and end Makoto's life, Optimus Prime and the Autobots arrived to battle their eternal enemies. Makoto watched with equal mixtures of awe and terror, until the Autobots succeeded in driving the Decepticons off, and he was finally given the chance to meet with his heroes in person. Makoto told the Autobots of his desire to fight alongside them, but after a moment of silence, he realized how foolish such a claim must sound. On the contrary, Prime informed him that it was his kind of strength that they were most in need of, and shook his hand, telling Makoto he was glad that they had met. First Contact Activation
Around six months later, as Makoto and a new crew were completing repairs to the damaged Trigger, the Decepticons returned: specifically, Starscream, and the time-displaced ghost of his own future self. Both the Autobots and the rest of the Decepticon forces arrived to foil the two Starscreams' plans, but the Decepticons' disregard for the safety and Makoto and the other humans meant that the Autobots had to fight them off first. In the course of the battle, the two Starscreams fused with the Trigger, transforming it into a massive, misshapen robot form, with Makoto and the crew still inside. In overlooking these humans, however, Starscream sealed his own defeat: from the Trigger's control room, Makoto activated the "purge system", blowing off the Trigger's outer armor and opening Starscream up to attack. The control module was also ejected, but the furious Starscream grabbed it and threw it, with the crew inside, down towards Earth. The capsule began to burn up, and Makoto feared his end had come, but at the last moment, Optimus Prime appeared to save the crew. Safe in the hands of Cosmos, Makoto then watched as Prime and Megatron combined their power to destroy the Trigger and defeat Starscream, but all the Transformers were caught in the backwash of the explosion, and sent plummeting down to Earth.
Several months later, no word had been heard of the Transformers. Makoto was selected as part of the crew to return to space and begin work on the Trigger II, but he knew that hidden somewhere on Earth, Optimus Prime and Megatron's battle continued... The Battle of the Star Gate
