On Cybertron, Megatron has a badly-damaged Optimus Prime pinned down, his fusion cannon pointed at the Autobot leader's head. He demands Optimus accept his demise, pointing out that there are no Autobots left to save him, but Optimus refuses to give in, lamenting how far his old friend has fallen. As Megatron prepares to deliver the killing blow, Prime gives the signal...and Bumblebee appears, ready to do battle with the shocked Megatron! Gameplay
Minecraft is primarily an open world sandbox game in which a player is dropped into a randomly generated world and given full freedom to explore, utilizing the materials from the world around them to craft tools, weapons, armor, or other objects. From there, players can brave the wilds and attempt to survive against the many monsters that inhabit it, explore the furthest corners of the world in search of secrets and rare materials, or simply construct whatever elaborate structures their heart desires. However, outside of the main gameplay loop, "Bedrock" editions of the game allow the player to purchase and play self-contained adventures that often feature unique gameplay mechanics and more elaborate themes, which is where the Transformers DLC comes in.
In the Transformers DLC adventure, up to four players can control Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, or Elita-1, battling Decepticons across several different environments. All four characters are able to double jump, dodge-roll, and transform to and from their vehicle modes at any time. When faced with an enemy, each character can fire a blaster to attack from a distance, though the weapon will overheat with continuous use. The character can also repeatedly hit the "mine" button to perform melee moves, which can be strung together into a combo attack. Performing multiple combos will fill the character's power bar; when full, the character will be able to use a special attack. Defeated enemies will drop energon cubes that can be used to restore health.
The Ark acts as the central hub, from which players can switch characters, select their next mission, and change their settings. Once a mission has been selected, players can enter the GroundBridge to be immediately teleported to their destination. Once all objectives in a mission are completed, the players can use a nearby extraction point to be returned to the Ark.
Transformers content
The Transformers DLC pack can be purchased from the Minecraft Marketplace for 1510 Minecoins (roughly $9 US). Outside of the Transformers campaign, the pack also includes character skins for the main game based on Orion Pax, D-16, B-127 and Elita-1 from Transformers One.
As part of the collaboration, players can obtain a free "Transformers Hoodie" item for the character creator from the dressing room. Character suits and matching masks based on the G1 versions of Optimus, Bumblebee, Elita, and Megatron are also available for purchase for 280 Minecoins each (around $2), along with an Autobot insignia mask for 120 Minecoins (around $1). Three Transformers emotes ("Optimus Kick", "Bumblebee Combo", and "Jazz Combo") are available for 660 Minecoins each (around $4), plus an "Autobot Conversion" emote worth 830 Minecoins (around $5).
Notes
- The Transformers DLC seems to draw heavy inspiration from Transformers: Devastation, including the appearance of many of its environments, its similar style of combat, the Ark acting as the central hub (including a similar minigame with Wheeljack), and the use of its Ground Soldier enemy types as the primary enemy generics.
- All the enemy Seekers appear to use Thundercracker and Skywarp's color schemes.
- The Transformers DLC utilizes the soundtrack from the 1984 cartoon for its background music. Cutscenes also make use of the show's classic scene transitions, complete with the original musical sting.
