While the city was badly wrecked, the Decepticons were defeated largely through their own ineptness and the President saw through their ruse, anyway. Unfortunately, the Autobots didn't think he would see through it and made themselves look suspicious by leaving! Plague of the Insecticons!

Dark of the Moon film

Following the defeat of The Fallen, NEST set up an operations headquarters in a massive Washington, D.C. building. Sam Witwicky also moved there, living in an improbably spacious loft apartment downtown. The Autobots regularly patrolled the D.C. area.

After Sentinel Prime's treachery had been exposed, the turncoat Prime rendezvoused with Megatron at the Lincoln Memorial, where Megatron blasted the statue of Lincoln to bits, and Sentinel set up a space bridge portal to the Moon. Several hundred Decepticons made planetfall then, causing pandemonium as they tore through the streets while scanning local vehicles.

Notes

  • The bio on the 2010 San Diego Comic Con reissue of Universe Blaster mentions that he is a fan of the "down and dirty" hardcore music scene from this town.

Washington, D.C. in Dark of the Moon

  • Perhaps owing to the difficulties of filming within the District of Columbia, relatively few scenes set in DC were actually filmed there. Among the handful that were are Optimus rolling past the Capitol building during the opening narration, and the initial invasion of the Decepticons through the space bridge, filmed at the Reflecting Pool and the adjacent Lincoln Memorial, and the Capitol Reflecting Pool at the other end of the Mall, where Sentinel and Optimus first fight.
  • Scenes not filmed in or near the District, despite being set there, include the entire highway chase sequence (filmed near Whiting, Indiana), all the NEST headquarters shots (filmed at Chicago's Old Post Office), and Sam's alley apartment (exteriors filmed in the Chicago Loop).
