Humayun Kabir, PhD
As a cultural anthropologist, I am deeply involved in and enthralled by researching Islam and Muslim communities in modern South Asia that unravel multiple, but complex and interrelated, facets of Muslim lives and cultures. By employing the anthropology and/or sociology of religion approach, my research interrogation revolves around Islamic religious education (madrasa) and identity politics, Islamism and democracy, religion and nationalism, minority Muslims' religious practices and freedom etc. My research critically analyzes the politics in local contexts, discourses and narratives, colonial trajectories, migration history, movement and protest, contested identity, and transnationalism.
My teaching interests include a wide range of areas of subjects in the fields of sociocultural anthropology, sociology, and liberal studies.
