The reactions studied concerned changes in destination, transport mode and parking lot choice in the context of shopping. It was also possible that the parking measure did not change the travel and parking behaviour of motorists. If the parking tariff is increased for a specific parking lot, the majority of the motorists will look for another parking lot or will not change their travel and parking behaviour. If the increase of tariff is implemented on all parking lots in the surroundings of a destination, most of the motorists will not change their travel behaviour. The most important factors that influence the reactions of motorist were 'the amount the tariffs increased', and 'length of parking duration'. In an on-street questionnaire, drivers were asked to respond on a restriction of access of the campus area for cars of non-university car drivers with a barrier, the means of identification when entering the campus area, and the way of payment. The responses of more than 700 car drivers are used in the analyses. The responses are related to personal characteristics by means of multinomial logit models. It appears that in case of a restricted access without payment, most of the car drivers will continue to drive to the university by car. Almost half of the car drivers indicate that they will change their travel behavior in the case they have to pay for entering the campus area. Most favorite option is changing transport mode, followed by park the car outside the campus area. There is no clear prefer...

This study describes the results of a stated choice experiment designed to address the problem with a special focus on applicability of the technique in South Africa. In addition to complexity of choice tasks, the experimental design was developed for various presentation formats and literacy levels of respondents and allowed the analysis of possible fatigue effects. A scaling approach is used to evaluate size of error variance as a function of task difficulty. In addition, contrast parameters are estimated to identify shifts in relative weights of attributes that one could expect when respondents increase the use of heuristic decision rules. Finally, non-compensatory decision models are estimated on the same data to find more direct evidence for an increase in non-compensatory decision-making. The findings suggest that presentation method, education leve...

This implies that opportunities for social contacts should be created. Compared to their younger counterparts, older adults are less mobile, spend more time at home, and participate in fewer social settings (e.g. work, school or sports clubs), which probably makes them more reliant on their neighborhood for social contacts. Neighborhood services and facilities such as shops, sports facilities, cafes and restaurants, community centers, and recreational areas can provide opportunities for social contacts among residents. However, the number of local facilities is decreasing due to increasing mobility, regionalization, Internet-use, and demographic decline in certain areas. This may have negative outcomes for the social participation of older adults and consequently their quality of life. For successful planning for the aging populat...

Internet shopping, economic decline and an ageing population are considered to be the main causes. Improving the atmospherics of inner-city shopping areas may be a solution to improve the competitiveness relative to other recreational destinations and attract more visitors to shopping centres. The aim of this research is to empirically determine which atmospheric characteristics contribute to the shopper's appreciation of inner-city shopping areas. A list of 25 environmental characteristics formed the basis of a survey that was conducted in the historic inner-city shopping areas of two Dutch medium sized cities: Maastricht and 's-Hertogenbosch. Within each of these inner-city areas, four locations were selected; two historical and two non-historical. At each location, the 25 characteristics were firstly assessed by the researchers. Secondly, in total 918 consumers were invited t...
