We evaluated the prevalence and consequences of human myiasis among people involved in animal hus... more We evaluated the prevalence and consequences of human myiasis among people involved in animal husbandry and butchers among 6 counties in Fars Province, Iran using a descriptive cross sectional survey. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to evaluate knowledge, community perceptions and practices. Three hundred two herders shepherds and butchers were included in the study. Eighty-eight point three percent of subjects had experienced myiasis during their job experiences. Seventy-one point five percent had become infected in barns. Pharyngeal myiasis was reported by 87% of subjects. The most likely cause of myiasis in subjects was the sheep botfly, Oestrus ovis (Diptera: Oestridae). Age and job experiences did not have an effect on the knowledge and practice regarding myiasis of subjects. Academic educational level had no significant effect on knowledge but did have a significant effect on practices. A myiasis education program needs to be created to better control and prevent this...
Bait-trapping appears to be a generally useful method of studying fly populations. The aim of thi... more Bait-trapping appears to be a generally useful method of studying fly populations. The aim of this study was to construct a new adult flytrap by some modifications in former versions and to evaluate its applicability in a subtropical zone in southern Iran. The traps were constructed with modification by adding some equipment to a polyethylene container (18× 20× 33 cm) with lid. The fresh sheep meat was used as bait. Totally 27 adult modified traps were made and tested for their efficacies to attract adult flies. The experiment was carried out in a range of different topographic areas of Fars Province during June 2010. THE TRAPS WERE ABLE TO ATTRACT VARIOUS GROUPS OF ADULT FLIES BELONGING TO FAMILIES OF: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Muscidae, and Faniidae. Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is functioned as national interventions against malaria in southea... more Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is functioned as national interventions against malaria in southeastern foci of Iran and deltamethrin WP one of the insecticides have been used since past decade. In this study, the residual activity of the wettable granule (WG) was studied on different surfaces in hut scale trial against Anopheles stephensi in Iranshahr District, southeastern Iran. Three dosages of 25, 40 and 50 mg a.i./m(2) of deltamethrin WG 25% formulation were applied on plaster, cement, mud, and wooden surfaces using Hudson(®) X-pert compression sprayer having 10 litters capacity. The residual effects of deltamethrin WG 25% on different surfaces was assessed based on reduction of mortality An. stepehnsi from 100% to about 70%. At 25, 40 and 50 mg a.i./m(2) the WG formulation of deltamethrin had a bioefficacy for about 2, 3 and 4 months respectively. Qeshm is a free trade zone, acting as an important channel for international commerce, and has been the site of much recent development. There is potential risk of stinging ant attacks for residents and visitors that may occur in the island. The aims of this study were to find out the fauna, dispersion, and some of the biological features of ant species with special attention to those, which can play role on the public health of the island. In this cross-sectional study, we surveyed ants around the island using non-attractive pitfall traps and active collection to evaluate potential threats to humans and other species during 2006-2007. All collected specimens were identified using the morphological ant keys. ONLY SIX ANT SPECIES WERE FOUND: Pachycondyla sennaarensis (41%), Polyrhachis lacteipennis (23%), Camponotus fellah (16%), Cataglyphis niger (9%), Tapinoma simrothi (7%), and Messor galla (4%). Asymptomatic malaria infection is often associated with subpatent level of parasitaemia and norma... more Asymptomatic malaria infection is often associated with subpatent level of parasitaemia and normal clinical examination. Such infection becomes a greater cause for concern when involved in blood transfusion and vector transmission. This study was performed to monitor the situation of asymptomatic malaria among the Afghani immigrants and native residents in Iranshahr district, a malaria endemic area in southeastern Iran, by performing conventional light microscopy. Out of 446 samples collected from Afghani immigrant participants, seven (1.6%) thick blood smears were diagnosed as Plasmodium vivax. None of the individuals who tested positive had malaria symptoms and they did not remember having had any malaria signs during the past two years. Out of 496 samples collected from native resident participants, three (0.6%) thick blood smears were detected as P. vivax and Plasmodium falciparum with mild malaria symptoms.
