« Les différents textes, qu’ils aient tenté d’explorer la validité du couple à l’heure du PCI ou qu’ils aient été tentés d’interroger la force ou la nature de la relation liant les deux termes, ont, chacun à sa manière, spéculé sur un aspect, soulevé des questions singulières, pour au final en faire ressortir et rendre productif son caractère aporétique : les limites de l’injonction participative (Rieks Smeets), le rapport ambivalent du politique et du populaire (Jacopo Storari), la co-construction d’un territoire et de ses habitants dans l’expérience esthétique (Hervé Parent), la tension consensus-dissensus (Éric Alendroit), le devenir anarchiste face à l’impermanence spatiale (Rémi Bénos), l’hétérotopie des migrants (Véronique Dassié), l’encodage capitaliste des lieux et des pratiques (Noël Barbe), le devenir autochtone comme alternative à la destruction capitaliste (Rocio Noemi Martinez-Gonzalez), la « destitution » du patrimoine devant l’anthropocène (Jean-Louis Tornatore). Qu’on la prenne sous l’angle de l’irruption du patrimoine dans les terrains (de jeu) des anthropologues ou bien sous celui de la constitution du patrimoine en un domaine singulier de recherche, l’anthropologie du patrimoine apparaît inséparable des interrogations récurrentes sur la catégorie de culture : sur son institution, sur sa mise en scène, sur sa spectacularisation, sur les façons de l’écrire comme sur la critique de son pouvoir de purification, de hiérarchisation ou de domination.
Que montrent ces écritures anthropologiques de patrimoines ? Qu’en se frottant aux expériences du passé, de la culture, religieuse ou profane, de la quête de reconnaissance, de la mémoire des violences de guerre, de la discrimination sociale, de la ruine des choses du monde, les anthropologues font l’expérience du patrimoine, instrument politique aux multiples fonctions : contrôle, aménagement, restauration, réparation, reconnaissance…

Appel à communication
À donner du crédit à l'hypothèse, formulée par Daniel Fabre (2013), selon laquelle, à partir des années 1960, sous l'impulsion du ministère des Affaires culturelles d'André Malraux, la société française serait entrée dans un « âge du patrimoine », on serait fondé à penser que l'invention du patrimoine ethnologique en a été un moment à la fois éclairant et singulier, à la fois le point d'orgue et le moment ultime. Éclairant parce qu'il aurait été la pleine expression de cet âge : prenant le pas sur le monument, le patrimoine devenait culturel puis immatériel, et étendait au peuple et à ses oeuvres le périmètre de ce qui doit être distingué, au nom de la nation en même temps qu'à celui de la connaissance savante. Singulier car il introduisait cependant une note dissonante dans le cours réglé de la « raison patrimoniale » en accompagnant sinon en orchestrant un certain débordement des institutions, la « démocratisation » de la cause patrimoniale – voire sa déclinaison démocratique –, sa diffusion et sa saisie dans les mondes sociaux. En somme, le patrimoine ethnologique serait au coeur de l'ambivalence même de l'âge du patrimoine – d'ailleurs parfois indexé sur la thèse présentiste (Hartog 2003) – où l'expérience du passé se confond avec celle de la culture et devient non seulement une affaire de tous, dans laquelle tout un chacun peut faire valoir ce qu'il a et ce qu'il est, mais un argument significatif de « développement », maître-mot performatif du local au national dont l'usage se répand au même moment. Et ainsi, il aurait été le ferment de la formation d'un « espace public » du patrimoine dont l'extraordinaire sinon monstrueux déploiement aujourd'hui dans les mondes académiques, associatifs, administratifs, politiques, économiques, etc., ne connaît guère de limites. C'est cette position singulière du patrimoine ethnologique et de sa politique que nous souhaiterions interroger avec ce colloque qui prolonge un séminaire tenu en 2010-2011, (« L'instauration du patrimoine ethnologique. Projet scientifique, catégorie d'action publique et instrument de gouvernementalité : retour sur une expérience française », IIAC-LAHIC, Paris), et en constitue l'aboutissement.
