Lithics collected from one such concentration were subjected to technological analyses aimed at identifying the core reduction methods. The results reveal aspects of human activity and the manipulation of the available raw material. The chaine operatoire approach permitted a dynamic reconstruction of the reduction processes used. The preliminary results allow the first stage of lithic reduction within the assemblage to be identified. Full reference: Perez Balazero, A. 2017. This has contributed to the long-held debate over the reliability of Pleistocene ages and the anthropic origin of stone tools and combustion features. In this work, we combine high-resolution geoarchaeological methods to study the formation processes of the Toca da Janela da Barra do Antonião North site (TJBA-North), located in a surface karst about 12 km northeast of the classical site of Boqueirão da Pedra Furada (Serra da Capivara, Piauí). The site contains stone tools and megafauna remains in sedimentary levels that have been dated by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) as more than 20,000 years ago up to the early Holocene. Using micromorphology, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), micro-FTIR on the micromorphology thin sections, and magnetic analyses, we carried out a comprehensive study of the climatic conditions during the late and terminal Pleistocene and investigated the depositional history of the site.

It is an almost complete bifacial piece on light local silex. In Brazil, Fishtail points have not been previously reported in detail north of the 22° S parallel. Hence, this new evidence importantly establishes human occupation of extreme northeast of South America during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition.

This period of occupation corresponds mainly to the development of Lima and Ychsma complex societies that were prior to and contemporary with the Inca Empire respectively. In order to study the degree of technical and functional variability between Maranga lithic industries, the different schemes operatoires executed were identified, as well as the characteristics of the raw materials procurement. The eight techno-types present amongst 497 tools, along with the analysis of plant micro-remains preserved in the transformative Techno-Functional Units, allowed us to obtain direct evidence of tool uses. Analytical procedures included the construction of a reference collection of useful local flora, the sampling of the transformative surfaces of the tools, and the taxonomic and anatomical identification of the recovered plant components. After the integration of the results of these analyses with the information coming from the archaeological contexts, diachronic changes in the production systems are proposed, especially the preference for an alternating debitage system in the Late Intermediate Period (~1050–470 BP). Towards the Late Horizon (~470–400 BP), there was probably an instrumental standardization associated with the processing of the fruits of Caesalpinia spinosa, a plant used in the production of gums and tanins.

Abstract. This paper analyzes the methodological viability of the application of concepts from French ergonomics in the techno-functional analysis of nine lithic assemblages of the Maranga Archaeological Complex (Central Coast of Peru), assigned to late periods (ca. 1.800-400 BP). From an approach that considers that tools exist only in action, the instrumentalization and instrumentation categories are applied in order to evaluate their relevance for the integration of the spheres of production and functioning. In this way, a methodological program was designed to integrate different specialized techniques (petrography, X-ray diffraction, taphonomy, technology and plant micro-remains) in order to identify the operational patterns of recurrent production and use in each lithic assemblage. The results obtained from each technique are evaluated according to the degree of theoretical-methodological coherence they express, and their relevance for the synchronic and diachronic study of instrumental variability in the Central Coast of Peru.
