But the writers give us nonetheless a global picture of the town which is far from the pessimistic view often expressed by scholars of the period. Archaeology has highlighted three principal characteristics which then have left a mark on the urban landscape. First, the proliferation of walled cities : as well as providing a protection, the rempart is the major element of the ornament of the towns and witness of the closing down of the ancient public and private monumental heritage. Two other traits are the corollary of the first : the transformation of the habitat was ineluctable, because of the radical modification of urban space, of the urban texture, the materials used, the installations linked to the supply of water and sanitation : here also, the archaeological data are not necessarily in agreement with the texts, and the differences could be significant from one town to another. Finally, the installation of a Christian topography : Christian buildings have progressively completed the monumental picture of the town ; they are often due to well-known builders (notably the bishops) who maintained the tradition of ancient evergesia. We emphasize the evolution undergone by the urban landscape throughout the period. However, until about 600, the city had hardly evolved in the imagination of contemporaries, although archaeology shows that if certain cities had survived and even prospered, others -the towns of Novempopulania for example -were reverting to the state of the countryside.
