He is Professor of Entrepreneurship and ICREA-Academia Research Fellow at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB). He is also Researcher at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation Research (CREIS). He received a PhD in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (UAB / Växjö University - Sweden), a MA in Applied Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology (UAB) and a BA in Economics and Business (UAB). His research focuses on the analysis of factors affecting entrepreneurship in different contexts, using the institutional approach as a theoretical framework, and combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies. He has published several studies in leading academic journals (including Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, International Small Business Journal, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Technology Transfer, Research Policy, Small Business Economics, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, etc.) and he participates in Spanish and international research projects (GEM, PSED, GUESSS). He regularly visits Haas School of Business (University of California BerkeIey). Also, he is Associate Editor of Small Business Economics Journal (SBEJ) and member of the Board of Directors in the European Council of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ESCB) (see further information at WWW.DAVIDURBANO.EU).

Entrepreneurial Universities and Regional Development: A Spanish Case Study

In this process, Entrepreneurial Universities play an important role in providing opportunities to promote an entrepreneurial culture, facilitating the generation of innovations and the development of the contemporary knowledge – based economy. For these reasons, in recent years, Entrepreneurial Universities has been the subject of political and academic interest. While governments are attempting to increase the Entrepreneurial Universities’ capabilities to stimulate entrepreneurship and contribute to the regional development, researchers are studying what are the most critical elements involved in this phenomenon. In an attempt to consider both perspectives, our main purpose in this chapter is to analyze how the Entrepreneurial Universities can contribute to the regional development. To this end, the missions of two of the most entrepreneurial universities in Spain, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Seville, are examined in depth using the case study methodology. The main findings of the research show that both Universities have developed an important number of actions in order to fulfill their three missions (teaching, research, and entrepreneurial mission), to become more entrepreneurial universities and to increase their contribution to the regional development. The implementation of entrepreneurial methodologies and courses, the stimulus of positive attitudes toward entrepreneurship, the support for technology transfer and the development of appropriate reward systems have been some of the most successful actions adopted by the universities

The immigrants’ enterprising behaviour has attracted the attention of institutions and scholars. In this context, the main objective of the paper is to explore the entrepreneurial process among immigrants in Spain, analysing Venezuelan business owners’ experiences in Catalonia. Specifically, this paper examines why some Venezuelan immigrants established in Catalonia decide to create new firms as well as the steps they follow to begin a new business. The empirical work adopts a qualitative perspective, analysing three case studies within a theoretical framework based on the theory of Institutional Economics. The main findings show that Venezuelans’ attitudes toward entrepreneurship influence, to a great extent, the business creation process, while the immigration policy and support programs for entrepreneurship influence, especially, the start up of the business.Durante la última década, la inmigración internacional está adquiriendo gran relevancia en las sociedades europeas. Igualmente, el comportamiento emprendedor que está demostrando una parte de los inmigrantes ha despertado la atención de instituciones y académicos. En este contexto, el objetivo principal del presente trabajo es explorar el proceso de creación de empresas entre la población inmigrante en España, a través del análisis de las experiencias de empresarios de origen venezolano en Cataluña. Específicamente, se analiza por qué algunos venezolanos establecidos en Cataluña deciden convertirse en empresario, así como los pasos que siguen para iniciar una actividad empresarial. El trabajo empírico se aborda desde una perspectiva cualitativa, a partir de tres casos de estudio, tomando como marco teórico de referencia la Teoría Económica Institucional. Los resultados revelan que las creencias y actitudes de los venezolanos hacia la actividad emprendedora influyen, en gran medida, en todo el proceso de creación de la empresa, mientras que la política de inmigración y los programas de apoyo a la creación de empresas repercuten, sobre todo, en su puesta en marcha.

Despite the fact that the determinants and the consequences of R&D activities have been extensive... more Despite the fact that the determinants and the consequences of R&D activities have been extensively studied in previous research, further efforts to integrate disparate streams of literature might bring new insights into innovation decision-making by firms. In particular, this article studies the simultaneous effects that a set of factors (at both company and environmental levels of analysis) have on R&D activity, which explain firm growth. A two-stage probit least squares (2SPLS) estimation is applied to data from the EU-EFIGE/Bruegel-UniCredit dataset for seven European countries for the years 2007–2009. The main findings show that not all the R&D determinants lead to firm growth. In particular, R&D activities are affected by the employment of a significant number of foreign executives, a higher percentage of employees with fixed-term contracts, appropriate labour regulations and access to employees who have received external training, all of which are positively related to firm growth. Based on these results, policy and practical implications to improve firms’ performances are discussed.

Leadership as a driver of entrepreneurship: an international exploratory study

The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of cultural leadership factors (charismatic... more The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of cultural leadership factors (charismatic/value-based, team oriented, participative, humane, autonomous and self-protective) on the rates of opportunity and necessity entrepreneurship. The study integrates insights from institutional and cultural leadership theories to provide a fresh perspective to advance comparative entrepreneurship research. To test the hypotheses, the authors conduct a multiple regression analysis with observations from 34 countries, using data (from the year 2013) from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor for the dependent variable and from Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness to create leadership factors as independent variables. The results show that all the types of leadership considered in the study have a relevant effect on entrepreneurial activity. However, charismatic leadership has a greater effect on entrepreneurial activity, particularly on opportunity entrepreneurship. The research also shows that autonomous leadership has a negative impact on entrepreneurial activity, although, when it is moderated by the humane dimension, this relationship changes. Since the alternative dimensions facilitate or inhibit the generation of new firm creation, it is critical for researchers, teachers and leaders to learn about and to foster such leadership types. This research covers a gap in the cross-cultural evidence presented in the literature and suggests the integration of the concepts leadership and entrepreneurship.
