Despite ubiquity and universal access, open linear TV remains the dominant medium in the major European markets. TV consumption is shifting and the process coincides with the rise of the scripted television series which started in the United States but has spread to other international markets, particularly in Europe. In this research, scripted television flows are observed in five major European markets: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. It is discussed how the changing environment affects the scripted television scheduling strategies. Content of 26 general interest channels are analyzed
This paper investigates the role of European Public Service Media (PSM) in the commissioning and ... more This paper investigates the role of European Public Service Media (PSM) in the commissioning and scheduling of local series over the past three decades. With a comparative approach between the main European television markets (Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain), the schedules of 30 seasons of 25 general-interest channels have been analysed to explore how the changes in the markets have altered the role of public channels as promoters of domestic fiction and local culture. The study shows a clear division along a Northern European axis with a large, uninterrupted commissioning of locally produced fiction, while Southern European public corporations have had a lower, more erratic approach. Despite this difference, all European PSM organisations analysed have maintained and increased the volume of local series titles during the last decade despite the appearance of portfolio DTT channels and transnational SVOD services, in contrast to commercial corporations.

TV fiction is a suitable genre to test new forms of audience loyalty, which is essential in a highly competitive environment. In this article, we present results regarding the actions of the industry through a content analysis of the official Twitter profiles of the most-watched series in Spain and the United Kingdom. We conclude that both market strategies revolve around the linear broadcast. However, Spanish channels are more aggressive in their actions to stimulate social conversation.

This article examines the visual data posted by viewers while watching the 2019 edition of the Spanish and British adaptations of the international Reality Show 'The Voice'. With the sample including images posted by viewers on Twitter during the broadcast of the episodes, the production formats, the type of content, the purpose of the images and the connection between the visual data and the text in the tweet have been analysed. The results highlight three different trends: the parallel visual narrative created by viewers on Twitter through the use of digital culture, the showcasing of their private sphere and the appropriation of images from the television episodes altering the discourse presented by the broadcasters.

To evaluate the structure and the strategy of the operators involved, this article makes an analysis of the sector starting from parameters such as its industrial configuration, its commercial policy or its program offer. The results make it possible to draw preliminary conclusions on how these new actors and this market fit into the ensemble of the television offer in the Spanish state.

Algunos de los hallazgos de esta investigacion muestran: a) escasa diversidad de generos, b) la politica editorial de las emisoras publicas se diferencia nitidamente de las privadas privilegiando la oferta de informacion, la ficcion de produccion nacional, y los info-shows de tipo documental, y c) apuestas de generos diferenciadas por titularidades segun los paises.
The main objective of this research focuses on the interaction between the traditional television... more The main objective of this research focuses on the interaction between the traditional television industry with its social audience through Twitter. For this purpose, we present a content analysis of the official Twitter accounts from the programmes with the highest audience belonging to 26 open general-interest channels in the five largest European markets (Germany, Italy, UK, France and Spain). Tweets published in the official accounts of the TV programs that make our sample were collected through API access and specific software. The specific objectives of the study involve the knowledge of the forms, social tv activation strategies, content and typologies of the publications in the accounts of these programmes belonging to the three main pillars of television schedules (fiction, info-show and information) and also in the divergences and similarities that exist between the general-interest channels depending on the country, the ownership and the genre. From our results, we conclude that there is a low level of interest, albeit unequal among countries, by the most popular programmes to interact with their social audience on Twitter.

Muchas de las prácticas que se han producido en el tiempo ilustran a la perfección la multitud de gradaciones que se pueden establecer entre la participación real y la simbólica, así com su grado de aproximación al ideal de la participación que implica la conversiónde los actores sociales en autores de sus propios discursos.
