Hans Dieleman
How can we surpass the mere instrumental, emotion-free and (big) data oriented approach that is so characteristic of contemporary science and science-based ways of knowing? How can we incorporate questions of the meaning of life – the ‘why?’ beyond the mere ‘how?’ - while seeing and embracing complexity, accepting that there is not one truth, not one best way of knowing, and not one best culture or way of living our lives? These questions motivate me, move me, make me want to do research and explore a new understanding of reality for the 21th century.
I am Hans Dieleman, of Dutch/Flemish origin, living in Mexico City, working globally. I have a doctoral degree in social sciences from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, work as a full professor in the Autonomous University of Mexico City, and as an external professor in the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico. I am also a fellow of the Texas-based Academy of Transdisciplinary Learning and Advanced Studies, and a co-coordinator of Cultur21-International, a platform for Cultural Fieldworks for Sustainability.
I look for answers to the questions raised above, combining science with art, with philosophy, subjective experience and reflexive practice, fusing mere cognitive knowing with embodied and enacted ways of knowing. I see this as a transdisciplinary approach in which, for me, the concept of transdisciplinary hermeneutics is central.
