This is something which has been acknowledged by the many scholars who have studied this issue who, on the one hand, have always highlighted the convergence of deeply rooted political, sociological, and economic questions in what is now the Spanish State and on the other hand, have pointed out the positive effects of regional policies applied since the end of the eighties up to present date. As is the case with other European States, Spain’s history is a complex one. A large number of events, dates, and decisions have influenced the shape taken by Spain as a State. Although the first great progression towards a unified State took place in the last decades of the fifteenth century, a number of the kingdoms and territories which made it up retained their differences with the rest, either in the form of important legal norms, taxes, language or other questions of the economic and social life of their inhabitants. This situation was maintained during more than two centuries, and although later the effective unification of the country was gradually imposed by the authorities, this did not prevent the survival of a number of differences and claims in some of its territories, as in Catalonia or in the Basque Country.

Airlines companies, hypermarkets, taxi services or industrial cleaning companies have almost exclusively in common that they produce specific services demanded or used by individuals, households and all type of firms. This heterogeneity implies, among other things, that the location of firms is characterized by a high diversity of possibilities. The main objective of this chapter is to provide a general outlook of some of the theories on the location of services, trying also to establish the most decisive factors for about the location of different types of services. After summarizing the old and new theories, the location trends of some specific activities—retailing, hotels and catering, business services and KIBS—are also analyzed on the basis of the most recent researches. Intra-urban and inter-urban aspects are also considered, as well as the specific case of capital cities.

All the regions were strongly affected, albeit with notable differences. The aim of this article is not to analyse the impact of the economic and financial crisis on the Spanish regions, but to contribute to an understanding of the resilient behaviour displayed by some regions by examining productive specialisation and its effects on regional productivity as explaining factors. The main conclusion is that the most resilient regions are those that had previously specialised in dynamic and productive industries, such as energy, some manufacturing and some advanced market services.

But, despite recent and important advances, services are still lacking of much more attention by researchers and frequently underestimated by politicians. The regional aspects of services growth is a field needing additional researches and contributions, because the continuous expansion of services has a variety of important effects and consequences from the territorial point of view. This book offers interesting and new contributions to this topic and the aim of this Introduction is to summarize the objectives pursued and some of the main findings reached. The chapter suggests also some of the main lessons that can be drawn from the analysis and contributions included into the book.
