This cultural tool, which makes it possible to think about change and to mobilise society to achieve certain horizons, has been a central element in Western modernity and remains indispensable in order to get out of the impasses to which this civilization has led us. This volume dismantles the cliché that the Hispanic world has been refractory to utopianism by reconstructing the long and rich tradition of social speculation that has existed in the different cultures of Spain and Latin America since the origin of the genre at the time of the "Discovery" of America. By tracing the continuities and changes that "Hispanic Utopias" have experienced from the 16th century to the present through a critical selection of their most representative texts, the anthology reflects the cultural and formal diversity of modern speculative thought, and outlines, through utopia, genuinely Hispanic paths towards modernity.

Through case studies that exemplify the field’s breadth and sophistication, it examines antifascism in two distinct realms: after surveying the movement’s remarkable diversity across nations and political cultures up to 1945, the volume assesses its postwar political and ideological salience, from its incorporation into Soviet state doctrine to its radical questioning by historians and politicians. Avoiding both heroic narratives and reflexive revisionism, these contributions offer nuanced perspectives on a movement that helped to shape the postwar world.

The available syntheses read like collections of national studies with a clear European or Western focus. However, methodological nationalism may soon become a thing of the past – the last few years have brought a transnational turn in anti-fascist studies, which this special issue tries both to illustrate and to discuss.

It shows how both Nationalists and Republicans used the experiences of previous conflicts such as World War I, as well as that of their totalitarian allies, in order to set up a number of propaganda and censorship services with the goal of persuading foreign – and specifically British – audiences of the legitimacy of their causes, and of the need to give them political, military, and relief assistance.
… The propaganda messages designed by both sides – ranging from the atrocities committed by the enemy to illegal foreign intervention on its behalf – are analyzed in detail, together with the techniques that were employed to transmit these messages: eye-witness accounts, official commissions, unofficial missions of investigation, documentaries, art exhibitions, etc. As to the impact of both campaigns on the British population, the author argues that their crude nature helped to mobilize both the extreme right and the extreme left, but alienated the great majority, who preferred to rally to the Non-Intervention policy adopted by the Baldwin and Chamberlain governments. The chronicle of this relatively neglected topic demonstrates not only the utter modernity of the Spanish conflict, but also the origin of some of the arguments still employed by current historians of the war.

Building on the work of Marc Angenot and Matthew Beaumont, among others, it argues that these texts not only provide a precious insight into the mentality of a large section of Spanish society in the transition to modernity but also illuminate the formative process of the modern dystopia. Spanish uchronias are interesting for various reasons: their abundance and variety during a very long period, the evidence of cultural transfers both into and—less often—from Spain, and their peculiar features, such as the important role played by religion both in the plot and in the identity of protagonists. More generally, the study shows the remarkable spread of the dystopian form in the Western world since the end of the nineteenth century and the need for further comparative and transnational analyses that integrate the traditions of “semiperipheral countries” into the general—and overwhelmingly Anglo-American—narrative on the history of utopianism.

Drawing upon a variety of published and archival sources, the article examines the changing views of British political elites, intellectuals, publicity experts and the public on the proper role of government in the public sphere, while discussing their influence on government policies and exploring the light they shed on British—and, more broadly, liberal democratic—culture and identity.

In: "Anti-Fascism in a Global Perspective: Transnational Networks, Exile Communities and Radical Internationalism", edited by David Featherstone, Nigel Copsey and Kasper Braskén, Routledge, 2020
As the source of one of the broadest movements of solidarity in history, the Spanish Civil War r... more As the source of one of the broadest movements of solidarity in history, the Spanish Civil War represents an ideal laboratory for the culture-oriented and increasingly transnational historiography that has developed since the turn of the century. This chapter examines the discourse and actions of the activists who supported –or refused to support– the Spanish Republic as combatants, relief workers or intellectuals, focusing on their conceptions of antifascism. Thus, it tries to move beyond existing international histories of the war to gauge the extent to which a transnational imagined community built on this notion operated throughout this period, its relations to parallel movements in various regions and its changing contours. While the often invoked Anti-fascist International never achieved actual unity or a truly global reach, it served as an effective bond between disparate actors and projects and had a considerable performative force in sustaining Republican resistance throughout the conflict.

It points out that as early as 1996 appeared a new scholarly approach to the topic, different from Furet’s revisionism but also from the antifascist paradigm that had prevailed in earlier decades, which conceived antifascism as a plural and complex culture that touched most of the world in the interwar period and survives to this day. The review highlights what it considers the most valuable contributions of this new historiography and concludes by stressing two challenges for future work on this area: to broaden and deepen research, both thematically, geographically and chronologically.

This presentation approaches the violence engendered by the Spanish Civil War from the point of view of foreign public opinion. Specifically, it aims to analyze the propaganda battle which was fought over the atrocities committed by both sides and/or their supporters from early in the war, and its effect on British reactions to the conflict. Drawing on the available propaganda material, contemporary memoirs, and Spanish and British archival sources, it argues that the Nationalist campaign on the Red terror –obviously inspired on the model of British anti-German propaganda during World War I- forced Republicans to launch a counter-campaign based on Fascist executions of civilians and air raids against open towns, and presented in very similar terms. Despite the differences in content and form between the two campaigns, the fact that both were equally lurid and contained many exaggerations and untruths contributed to weaken their impact abroad. In Britain, Spanish atrocity stories were successful in mobilising each side´s most ardent supporters, but they also –and most importantly- helped to reinforce traditional and deeply-entrenched stereotypes depicting Spain as a savage country and the Spaniards as a cruel race, and therefore the policy of Non-Intervention pursued by the British National Government throughout the conflict. Both the available assessments of prevailing social attitudes and the evidence concerning certain opinion leaders suggest that K.W. Watkins conclusions about the effectiveness of this kind of propaganda in 1930s´ Britain should be nuanced. In this respect, the Spanish War may be seen as a prelude to the widespread disbelief of atrocities denounced by Arthur Koestler during World War II."
This paper analyzes one of the chief propaganda techniques employed by the Spanish Republic in order to seduce international public opinion during the Spanish Civil War: organized tours by foreign personalities. Political tourism, traditionally considered as a distinctive feature of socialist regimes, was employed by both sides during the 1936-1939 conflict, but Republicans were better at it thanks, partly, to their ties to the Comintern. The paper focuses on the country which furnished the greater number of “war tourists” to the loyalist side: Great Britain. Drawing on Spanish and British sources, it describes thoroughly the services which organized the trips, the motivations of each tourist, the content of their visits, and their impact on British media and politics. The author concludes that the Republican campaign was a remarkable propaganda exercise, although it did not achieve the desired results and was therefore a waste of money and efforts.
