Although in the past the successive crises of cities, urbanism and the State have been related to the decrease of agglomeration and to the population dispersal, the issue appears more complex and diversified when focused on specific situations. By following the spatial and socio-political conditions of the Jabbul and Jazr plains, in Inner Syria, from the Late Bronze Age to Iron Age II, it becomes apparent that, although processes of agglomeration and dispersal are visible, they do not match some usual narratives regarding the settlement patterns of these periods. Also, it will be argued that the spatial conditions of the different contexts, including the agglomeration and dispersal of people, impacted on the social and political practices of human groups.

denomina “rey”.

Building walls, then, comes out as a powerful device in defining collective identities, both positive and negative-"us" and "them". But agglomeration in walled sites need not be read on a unilineal dimension. It is both a response to punctual challenges and a cause for new challenges in turn, and every scenario may develop differently. In this presentation, we will examine a few walled, nucleated settlements from Iron Age Syria and the Aegean (Tell Afis, Tell Tay'inat; Mycenae, Nichoria), and in which transformations in the socio-political landscape are identifiable. Although the challenge(s) of creating and organizing political communities in a restricted space are common, it will be argued that the different socio-political responses to these challenges are tied to specific political cultures and cannot be predicted by spatial conditions. In this sense, although spatial conditions often enabled, restricted or encouraged specific practices, we would like to stress what communities actually did or could do within such conditions.
