Papers by Claudia Stern
The award committee praises the work for its contribution to the field of history and to comprehensive understandings of Chilean and Latin American everyday life and politics. Its wide-ranging relevance to fields such as political science, and class and gender studies speaks to important issues of social inequality and resistance that Latin American democracies are facing today. Through an investigation of three decades of the everyday life of middle classes in Chile, Stern's rigorous and deep research takes the reader through archival material, oral histories and places that shaped Chile's history, all carefully documented in the remarkably rich bibliography. The book creatively draws together issues of class and gender to make a novel and refreshing argument, which distinguishes the book from other class studies about Chile. Its epilogue alludes to how the past resonates in the present, in key historical contemporary moments such as Chiles' 'Estalido Social', the national plebiscite and the rise of the feminist movement. While lengthy, Stern's book is refreshingly written in an elegant, clear and engaging style.
