It inevitably undergoes constant changes in order to adapt to the requirements of a particular discursive practice (spoken or written communication, face-to-face or online communication, specialized language, etc.). In addition to this, language is externally influenced by the borrowing of loanwords. Focusing on anglicisms in Norwegian, this paper analyses the use of borrowings and of code-switching in the informal speech of teenagers as it is depicted in the Norwegian teen drama web series ‘Skam’. The gradual acknowledgment of English as an international language paved the way in Norway for the acceptance of this foreign language in various domains, especially in the academia, as a tool for increasing exposure and for internationalization practices. This article investigates different types of language errors performed in a written summative exa... more This article investigates different types of language errors performed in a written summative exam by ten BA students enrolled in an elective Norwegian Didactics course in Romania. The corpus comprising the students’ exam papers was analysed qualitatively to identify various types of errors. The theoretical model suggested by Gass & Selinker (1994) was used to discuss issues of error analysis. A survey was then conducted to receive student feedback on the reported errors in the texts. Findings indicate that students make both inter-lingual and intra-lingual errors and that error analysis can be helpful when designing L2 Norwegian instructional materials. Perceptions of Developing Reading and Writing Skills in Swedish in an Online Context. This paper ... more Perceptions of Developing Reading and Writing Skills in Swedish in an Online Context. This paper intends to focus on BA students' reading and writing skills in Swedish as a foreign language in a Scandinavian context. In addition, the study aims to discuss the difficulties students have encountered when studying Swedish as a foreign language in an online academic context amid Covid-19 pandemic. A survey research comprising closed-ended and open-ended questions was conducted by using a questionnaire as the main instrument for collecting data. The respondents were BA students in Norwegian language and literature, enrolled at the Faculty of Letters at Babeș-Bolyai University, who had already studied Norwegian for four semesters in the frame of this programme and who took the one semester optional course in Swedish. The language distance between Norwegian and Swedish is relatively small because both languages are part of the North-Germanic branch. We considered it relevant to explore the manner in which students tackle these similarities, differences and the crosslinguistic transfer between the two languages and whether their reading and writing practices in Norwegian have influenced in any way the acquisition of Swedish. Nowadays, new technological advances provide additional support to foreign language learning and develop learners' digital literacy. Therefore, the paper aimed at understanding what types of authentic resources are used by students, in order to develop their linguistic and sociolinguistic competence in Swedish. The results showed that students are willing to improve their language skills, as they believe that mastering another Scandinavian language could help them increase their academic and professional opportunities and would constitute an advantage in terms of easiness to develop writing and reading skills in Swedish.

The goal of this paper is to explore how the use of the popular Norwegian web-based TV series SKA... more The goal of this paper is to explore how the use of the popular Norwegian web-based TV series SKAM (SHAME) can enhance cultural awareness by exposure to authentic language and to diverse discourse practices that have both a multilingual and a multicultural dimension. English, through the use of anglicisms and code-switching in SKAM, acts as a cohesive factor that reflects the changes within the Norwegian society while building bridges between different cultures because of its global influence, particularly upon the younger generations. These generations no longer perceive English as a foreign language, but rather as an essential part of their personal and collective identity, and this is reflected in their discourse practices. The analysis of the teenage informal discourse in the series SKAM provides insights into the benefits of using authentic resources to acquaint BA students with the Norwegian contemporary culture.

It is of paramount importance to understand how language knowledge and literacy are evolving in accordance with the demands of the 21st century society. Digital media are changing reading and writing practices and are conducive to the development of a new set of literacies. Therefore, it is relevant to seize the educational opportunities that arise and understand their implications in the field of foreign language learning. This paper intends to focus on the relationship between language, culture and new technologies in order to highlight issues of multimodality and identity. REZUMAT. Promovarea unor noi modele de alfabetizare în contextul predării limbii norvegiene ca limbă străină. Este important să înțelegem cum învățarea unei limbi și procesul de alfabetizare se adaptează cerințelor societății secolului al XXI-lea. Mass-media digitală determină o schimbare în abilitățile de scriere și de citire favorizând astfel dezvoltarea unui nou model de alfabetizare. De aceea, este necesară conștientizarea acestor oportunități educaționale precum și înțelegerea implicațiilor pe care acestea le exercită în domeniul învățării limbilor străine. Acest studiu intenționează să se concentreze pe relația dintre limbă, cultură și noile tehnologii pentru a evidenția aspecte legate de multimodalitate și identitate. Due to the constant exposure to English both in the academic environment and in informal settings, younger generations in Norway tend to engage more often in language mixing and regard this international language as an essential part of their daily lives. The findings of this paper concluded that in addition to the use of anglicisms, two types of codeswitching – inter-sentential and intra-sentential code-switching) – were identified in episodes 9 and 10, season 4, of ‘Skam’. In this line of thought, the use of anglicisms in ‘Skam’ and the code-switching performed are iconic for today’s teenagers, as it testifies for the dominance of the western culture in their daily lives, and explains, at least partly, the wide success of this

The pre-service teacher training experience allows trainees to put in practice the literature they have read and get familiarized with the didactic challenges they would have to overcome once employed in the public or the private educational system. In order to further understand pre-service trainees' perceptions of their teaching experience trainees had to fill in a reflective journal which was evaluated from a qualitative perspective. This reflective journal was intended to help trainees reflect on their teaching practice in order to achieve professional development.

This paper intends to describe the context of learning and teaching Norwegian for academic purposes. There are presented the aims and the competences that are targeted by the seminar on the didactics of the Norwegian language, which is brought up for discussion in this study. The emphasis is placed on the students' needs and their learning strategies. A needs analysis has been conducted in order to identify the students' interests and motivation for attending the seminar. The findings lead to the conclusion that students are motivated to attend the course and improve their academic skills. Furthermore, they have become autonomous learners and are more aware of their learning strategies.

This paper intended to provide arguments in favour of teaching and learning foreign languages through an intercultural learning approach. The acknowledgement of the fact that all learning is placed in a social context has multiple implications both in the way teaching and learning sequences are planned and in the way assessment is conducted. The assessment of the intercultural communicative competence is challenging because culture is perceived in a subjective manner.

Therefore, in an increasingly multicultural society, the development of a competence that facilitates appropriate cultural and linguistic transfers needs to be considered. The paper provides details about the challenges and positive aspects of learning a foreign language in a multicultural and multilingual context. The educational landscape has undergone considerable changes in order to accommodate the learning process to the requirements imposed by a globalized society. REZUMAT. Învățarea limbilor străine în clasele multiculturale și multilingvistice ale societății actuale. Acest studiu a încercat să evidențieze faptul că învățarea unei limbi străine implică abilitatea unui individ de a comunica eficient în diverse context culturale și lingvistice. De aceea, într-o societate în care se intensifică latura multiculturală este necesară dezvoltarea unei competențe care să faciliteze transferurile culturale și lingvistice. A research has been conducted in order to investigate the would-be teachers’ points of view regarding the appropriateness of teaching Norwegian by focusing on enhancing both cultural and linguistic elements. The would-be teachers enrolled in an initial teacher training program have proven to be aware of the intricate links that exist between language and culture. They have understood that Norwegian cannot be taught without taking into consideration its cultural elements.
This paper intended to provide examples of ICT resources that could be used in order to support a... more This paper intended to provide examples of ICT resources that could be used in order to support and enhance the learning of English, at bachelor level, from an intercultural perspective. The development of intercultural communicative competence is no longer optional in a globalized society. Face-to-face interaction rules need to be replaced by netiquette rules in a virtual space since online communication has become the norm today in all career fields. The subjective turn in foreign language teaching aims to make students more aware of their own cultural programming and cultural encodings when interacting with interlocutors belonging to other cultures. This paper provided an example of efficient use of ICT resources in order to develop students’ intercultural communicative competence in a technology-based medium of communication.

Many studies and reports suggest that the literacy levels of Roma children are significantly lowe... more Many studies and reports suggest that the literacy levels of Roma children are significantly lower in comparison to the ones of their peers, and that this issue is prevalent throughout Europe. Literature in this field indicates that Roma children's school absenteeism is a disheartening reality that has a detrimental impact on their educational outcomes. Roma children's knowledge gaps widen because children do not regularly attend school. As a consequence, they have limited access to meaningful educational resources and to substantial language input. In this paper several empirical studies were brought into discussion to help explain to what extent and how school absenteeism influences Roma children's literacy development. The findings indicate that school attendance plays a critical role in the development of Roma children's vocabulary and reading comprehension. Various factors can account for absenteeism: the personal context, the family context, the school context, and the community context. Each context is addressed in depth to provide understanding of how absenteeism affects the literacy of Roma children in multiple ways.

The development of literacy skills of children from disadvantaged backgrounds has always been a r... more The development of literacy skills of children from disadvantaged backgrounds has always been a relevant topic in education as it represents a means of reducing poverty and of improving living conditions. This paper focuses on the Roma minority, a historically disadvantaged minority and the largest ethnic group in Europe that has been reported to have a low literacy rate compared with their non-Roma counterparts. This study intends to identify the main challenges that Roma children face when they learn how to read and point out potential educational practices that can alleviate the condition of Roma children by helping them to improve their literacy development rate.
