This relation is theorized by positing as a main premise that the curricular act is decisively involved in the structuration of the subject by means of the psychoanalytic phenomenon of the transference. A crucial insight that emerges from this theorization is the understanding that curriculum functions as an unfinished symptom. The chapter closes with a discussion of the notion of curriculum as a “conversation” from the psychoanalytic perspective of the transference involved in and through the dialogical encounter.

To do this, I work through an essay by Ignacio Martin-Baro called “La Psicologia de la Caricia” [the psychology of a caress] (1970). As Martin-Baro compellingly shows, there is a subtle dialectic through which touch and the human being shape each other. In discussing the phenomenality of this dialectic in touch, I draw both from the phenomenological tradition represented in the lineage of Husserl, Heidegger, and Marion, as well as from psychoanalytic theory. Methodologically, the study is organized in three moments of phenomenological reductions, operationalizing a “trinitarian lens”. The chapter then offers a discussion on the Freudian perspective on the drives, as lending an understanding of the phenomenality of touch by positing Eros as “the ultimate cause of all activity”, particularly including educational activity.

The central assumptions sustaining the argument conceive curriculum-the backbone of educational practice-to be an expression of ideological activity; the understanding of ideology as lived experience; and subjectivity as a site of ideology mediated by language. By drawing on curricular and psychoanalytic theory, in this paper I claim that the ideological content gets established through curricular practices not only at the cognitive and conscious level of knowledge and disciplinary subject-matter contents, but rather-and more decisively-at the unconscious level of the construction of subjectivity through psychic processes mediated by language. The paper is an attempt to sketch a preliminary understanding of the processes that result in ideological positionings that challenge scrutiny and contestation, by exploring their rootedness in desire and the psychic formation of the self.

Encounters in Theory and History of Education

It is a response to a paper presented by Elliot Eisner titled “The Curriculum Field Today: Where we, Where we were, and Where we are Going”. From a perspective of intellectual history, I claim that it is with this paper that Pinar provoked a turning point in the field of curriculum studies, one that brought the focus of attention back to the subjectively existing individual at the center of educational experience and opened the way for a more careful and dedicated consideration of the problem of subjective reconstruction. While this notion was foreshadowed by Huebner, it is in this presentation that Pinar articulates clearly the importance of the concrete subject: a flesh and blood person appears. In this sense, the field of curriculum studies returns, however inadvertently at this point, to the continental views on education as formation.

The essays are situated within a postcolonial perspective in dialogue with queer theory, inviting a rethinking of current discursive practices around the curriculum of teacher education, asking – among other things – Where do these discourses and practices come from? What gives them legitimacy?, What effects do they have? as a way to problematize the ways in which the curriculum of teacher education is responsible of signifying, appropriating and reproducing identitarian configurations, as well as problematize ways of thinking that discipline and configure certain modalities of life projects through their formative action.
