Launette M . Rieb
Launette Rieb, MD, MSc, CCFP(AM), FCFP, CCSAM, DABAM, FASAM is a Family Physician certified in Addiction Medicine both in Canada and the US. She is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Family Practice, at the University of British Columbia, and is on Staff at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. Her Bachelor of Science in Biology was from McGill University, and her Master of Science in Physiology was from the University of Toronto. She attended medical school at McMaster University and did Family Medicine Residency at The Toronto Hospital, Western Division. She has completed two research fellowships: The Clinical Scholars Program (UBC), and The Canadian Addiction Medicine Research Fellowship (St. Paul's Hospital).
Dr. Rieb teaches undergraduate, graduate and post graduate medical trainees and was the Co-Creator and initial Physician Director of the first Addiction Medicine Fellowship in BC. She helped to create national key features and standards for the Certificate of Added Competency in Addiction Medicine for the College of Family Physicians of Canada. She is the recipient of the UBC Post Graduate Teaching Award, and the BC College of Family Physician's Exceptional Teacher Honour.
Dr. Rieb conducts research in the areas of pain and addiction. She led the first perinatal substance use guideline committee in BC and the first national Opioid Use Disorder guideline among older adults. She identified a novel opioid withdrawal pain phenomenon, Withdrawal-associated Injury Site Pain (WISP), that is a driver of recurrent opioid use. She is the Co-Editor of a textbook on opioid agonist treatments by the Centre for Mental Health and Addiction in Toronto, and the Editor of the Assessment chapter of ASAM's Essentials of Addiction Medicine, 2nd Ed.
Dr. Rieb works clinically with injured workers treating pain, addiction, and mental health concurrently in an interdisciplinary team through ActumHealth, in Surrey, BC.
