The aims were 1) to identify how spatial issues are incorporated in social work curriculums in Chile and 2) to compare how this incorporation is made in social work programmes in different higher education institutions. The method was a quantitative and descriptive analysis of the curricula of the totality of the programmes in the country (N = 45). We defined 11 concepts to search: community, spatial concepts (territory, environment, place, space), spatial phenomena (city, rural, housing), and social concepts associated with spatial issues (networks, poverty, citizenship). The results show that community is the most relevant concept. Nevertheless, when viewed collectively, spatial concepts hold similar significance. However, there are noticeable differences in how different higher education institutions use spatial concepts. Professional institutes often overlook spatial concerns compared to universities. We recommend regulating social work education to incorporate a minimum curriculum that addresses these issues. Further research is needed to evaluate course content, references, and scientific publications in Chilean social work.

Specifically, it is addressed the case of the University of Bio-Bio, in the city of Concepción, Chile. The methodology was qualitative, with some participatory elements. Twenty interviews were applied to inhabitants of the neighborhood near the campus, including neighbors that rent their properties to students, neighbors that do not rent their properties, local market owners, and university students. To analyse them, the software Atlas.ti was utilized to describe the perceptions about relationships between neighbors and students. In the second stage, this information was utilized to elaborate informative stands, which were also used as participatory places where 73 students could propose potential strategies for strengthening the relationships with the neighborhood. The results show that the neighbors recognize the studentification context, which is growing on time, and that they have weak community relationships and limited relationships with the students. The relationships between students and the neighborhood are contradictory: they are valued in economic and social aspects, but they also imply conflicts. The students propose several strategies in order to strengthen community relationships. Most of these relate to the connection between art and community life, education, volunteering and university extension. In all these proposals, the role of the university is recognized as a relevant issue. The university should coordinate and facilitate encounter processes to strengthen community relationships.

For that reason, space and place have been considered by some social work scholars as relevant issues. Actually, the spatial dimension has been central in social work since the beginning of the profession, even if it has not been theorised using knowledge from other scientific fields like geography, urbanism, or rural and urban sociology. Despite the above, during the last decades, several works have been produced that establish bridges between social work and other spatial-focused scientific disciplines. These works use spatial concepts such as environment, place, territory, and rural, urban, global or glocalised social work, among other concepts.

Abstract Objective. To develop a reflection on how to incorporate the spatial dimension in the analysis that all design of social interventions requires. Methodology. Based on the connection between the work of Henri Lefebvre and the field of Social Work, and the teaching experience in a Chilean school of social work, an own theorical-methodological proposal is elaborated. Results. A general form of analysis is proposed that considers the spatial as consubstantial to the social, from a trialectics perspective. This proposal integrates material, subjective and social dimensions, on macro, meso and micro scales. Conclusions. It is considered that this proposal allows overcoming naive or conservative views, and perspectives that conceive the territorial area as a mere level of intervention. Additionally, a set of challenges that arise from this proposal are indicated.

In the first place, it is generally concluded that space constitutes an unavoidable dimension of any intervention. This has as implications that it is necessary to move towards a transdisciplinary socio-spatial perspective about intervention, breaking the fragmentation of the intervention processes, and rethinking social intervention professions role in socio-spatial transformation. In this context, the challenges are not only epistemological but also ethical-political.

Assistentes Sociais. Geração. Gênero. Etnia. Generational, gender and ethnic inequalities among Chilean social workers Abstract: The inequalities in the labor market among Chilean social workers were examined, analyzing whether they differ from the trends observed in other professions. Two samples of the National Socioeconomic Characterization Survey (CASEN) database from the Ministry of Social Development of Chile (2015) were used. The contingency coefficient determined the intensity of the association between economic income and contractual condition, in relation to the variables gender, generation and ethnicity. The results indicated that the proportion of social workers in the tenth part of the population with largest national income varies according to generation and ethnic group, and the proportion of those having permanent work varies according to gender and generation. In both cases, generation has the strongest association, observing more pronounced inequalities among social workers than among other professionals. There is a debate about the reproduction of inequalities in social work – associated with neoliberalism – and the ethical-political challenges that this implies.
