Le comte de Montlosier a laissé 386 lettres adressées à Claude-Ignace de Barante et à son fils Pr... more Le comte de Montlosier a laissé 386 lettres adressées à Claude-Ignace de Barante et à son fils Prosper entre son retour d’émigration en 1801 et sa mort en 1838. Cette correspondance, qui excède la communication épistolaire duelle pour étendre ses ramifications jusqu’à Coppet, Rome, Londres et Berlin, est pour l’épistolier un instrument d'intégration dans la France postrévolutionnaire, et pour l'historien un observatoire privilégié des mécanismes à l’œuvre dans ce processus. Les réseaux amicaux épistolaires tissés créent des espaces de communication hybrides, mêlant intimité, promotion sociale, et information. Entre Ancien Régime et modernité postrévolutionnaire, les lettres sont ainsi destinées à lutter contre la fragmentation du temps. Cette analyse s’inspire des Democratic Studies, qui ont questionne depuis 1989 le role des elites... more Cette analyse s’inspire des Democratic Studies, qui ont questionne depuis 1989 le role des elites (entendues comme detentrices du pouvoir politique, economique, intellectuel, militaire,administratif,etc.) dans les processus de transition politique. Pour John Higleyet Jan Pakulski, le degre de fragmentation et de differenciation des elites, ainsi que leur mobilite constituent les ressorts majeurs des modalites du processus transitionnel. Ce modele permet de renouveler la lecture de la transition entre Revolution, Empire et Restauration, ce qui sera fait ici a travers le cas du comte de Montlosier (1755-1838). Celui-ci a ete tres tot convaincu de la necessite de constituer un corps voue au service de l’Etat pour stabiliser le regime : dans sa reflexion theorique comme dans sa trajectoire,il a defendu l’idee d’une noblesse ouverte dans son recrutement,specialisee dans la haute fonction publique, tandis que la bourgeoisie se consacrerait au negoce et a l’industrie. Le rôle des émigrés a peu été pris en compte dans l'étude de la diffusion du mesmérisme en Europe... more Le rôle des émigrés a peu été pris en compte dans l'étude de la diffusion du mesmérisme en Europe et en Amérique du Nord à l'époque de la Révolution française. Cet article se propose de faire le portrait de groupe d'(ex-) mesméristes en exil, et d'analyser l'usage qu'ils firent du magnétisme à l'étranger, dans les domaines médical, littéraire, philosophique et politique. La pratique dans les milieux de l'émigration s'avère confidentielle, et le mesmérisme fut souvent fondu dans une critique plus large des Lumières et de la franc-maçonnerie. Il s'inscrivait pourtant toujours dans ce vaste mouvement d'exploration scientifique des possibles qui passionna Montlosier au même titre que le volcanisme, et qui ouvrit Charles Villers à la philosophie de Kant. Doté d'un caractère subversif, le magnétisme animal issu des théories swedenborgiennes n'a para-doxalement jamais cessé d'être pratiqué par Joseph de Maistre, partisan d'une lecture providentialiste de la Révolution et de pos-tions ultra-royalistes. À l'heure de la Restauration, c'est finalement au nom du principe tout mesmérien d'harmonie universelle que celui-ci encouragea la formation de la Sainte-Alliance.

Alors que c'est souvent a la Seconde Guerre mondiale et a ses suites que sont associees les experiences des deplacements forces, des internements massifs de civils et de militaires, cet ouvrage propose de placer la focale sur un long xix e siecle, de la Revolution francaise aux lendemains de la Premiere Guerre mondiale. Ce livre a pour ambition de proposer une analyse conjointe et comparée, à la fois diachronique et internationale, de trois grands types d’expériences a priori dissemblables, celles des réfugiés, des prisonniers de guerre et des déportés lors d’un siècle qui vit à la fois ces phénomènes se massifier et — lentement encore — se différencier. Ces trois formes de circulation transnationale contrainte — alors encore comparables à bien des égards — sont caractérisées par un moment d’arrachement qui se déroule dans un contexte de violence (guerre, révolution, crise), suivi d’une migration forcée et d’une implantation provisoire ou définitive. Ces déplacés subissent alors souvent une marginalisation lors de leur séjour dans le pays d’accueil. Ce volume collectif vise essentiellement à comparer des situations qui ont fait l’objet de recherches récemment renouvelées, mais qui continuent à se côtoyer plus qu’à se croiser. C’est donc à cette histoire croisée, à la fois juridique, sociale, culturelle et politique, particulièrement novatrice de l’expérience de l’arrachement et du déplacement forcé qu’invite ce livre.
