Como se explicará, se trata de una perspectiva que solo ha comenzado a desarrollarse en los últimos treinta años de investigación morfológica, tras la constatación de las limitaciones que presentan la Morfología Distribucional o la Morfología Generativa, que atienden de modo preferente a la descripción de las relaciones sintagmáticas, es decir, las que establecen ente sí los constituyentes morfológicos en el interior de cada palabra.

Consequently, dialectal boundaries are usually drawn employing mainly phonetic, morphological or lexical traits. In the case of Spanish this bias can easily be confirmed by the main contents of the regional linguistic atlases of Spain. The present chapter is aimed to be a complete review of the syntactic information present in these atlases. We will evaluate its actual usefulness as to the purpose of defining dialect areas inside European Spanish. Finally, after examining the main syntactic features subject to variation in Peninsular Spanish, we will also make a tentative proposal of dialect areas based on syntactic differences.

The differences between the Standard Spanish pues and the Basque uses of this same particle will be examined and thoroughly described in order to establish the distinctive syntactic and semantic features of the latter. By so doing, we will introduce the topic of a possible language contact explanation. In this regard it will be necessary to face similar facts about pues in Andean Spanish in contact wtih Quechua. This complete scenario of coinciding developments for pues in Spanish This research is part of the project "El español en contacto con otras lenguas II: variación y cambio lingüístico" headed by Azucena Palacios (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) and partly funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (Ref. FFI2015-67034-P). We would like to thank the three anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments and their contribution to improve this work. Any errors are solely ours. Isogloss 2020, 6/9 Bruno Camus 2 contact dialects will be finally taken into account in order to suggest some of the paths leading to an explanation of the origins of the specific uses of pues in Basque Country Spanish.
