I am a Professor of Anthropology at UCLouvain, holder of the Chair of Anthropology of Contemporary Europe (since September 2020), member of the Laboratory of Prospective Anthropology. My early works deal with anthropology of symbolic and religious systems in rural contexts. The subsequent treatment of the theme of transitions in Europe and in the world (Latin America and Asia) constitutes an empirical deepening of a subject that I have been tackling since the beginning of my research: reflecting on ecological and anthropological transitions in order to anticipate threats and learn to live with and counteract disasters.

To make agri-food systems more sustainable the pressing need to rethink food-related practices in cities has received momentum in the past 20 years across many European cities. Transdisciplinary and participatory research can generate knowledge and promising solutions to facilitate the transition of urban agri-food systems. This article highlights the contributions of six research projects driven by the notion of “co-creation” research for urban agri-food system transition, using Brussels as the research context (program “Co-Create”). The article outlines the main research foci and characteristics of the six “Co-Create” projects funded by this call, how they are embedded in the broader dynamics and initiatives of Brussels, and the theoretical foundations of the notion of “co-creation” research that sits at the intersection of transdisciplinary and participatory action research. Subsequently the paper illustrates how the six Co-Create project brought together different actors in Brussels including researchers, citizens, associations, and government agencies, that were united with a shared awareness of the need for change of the city's agri-food system. The six research consortia targeted different issues across three aspects of the agri-food system: agricultural production in urban areas, food distribution and marketing, and accessibility and democratization of sustainable food. We critically reflect on some common insights generated by the six projects, and particularly (a) a series of recommendations that were drafted for public authorities and called for the acceleration and strengthening of efforts for urgent changes in the agri-food system of Brussels, and (b) findings that address the epistemological and methodological strengths and limitations of conducting co-creative research processes to facilitate agri-food system transition. We also discuss how the Co-Create projects might have created a historical momentum that has encouraged the placing of the transition of agri-food systems on the political agenda of Brussels, and by identifying future challenges for agri-food system transitions in Belgium.

Based on ethnographical studies undertaken among Ifugao people in the Philippines, this paper aims at contributing to produce knowledge about the construction of rice agricultural practices forced to adapt to socio-economic and climate change. However, six years after having classified the site as a patrimony of humanity, UNESCO, announced its concern for these rice terraces by including them on the list of world heritage sites in danger. Peasants, aristocrats, monks, shamans, priests, and later, scientists and seed companies, have all set about the task. For much of the global agricultural system, the period following the Second World War marked the transition from domestic farming to modern agriculture, with its emphasis on maximizing productivity (Bonneuil and Thomas 2009). Seed became a commodity, one whose parameters were guaranteed, predefined, and circumscribed (in order, amongst other things, to limit the risk of farmers committing fraud). As early as the nineteenth century, in their efforts to define and limit the variables of a seed, seed companies and scientists began to develop the notion of plant “varieties.” To this end, within their laboratories, they analyzed, classified, and selected crops from their trial fields and created seed banks. However, this ex situ approach has often ignored small-scale farming knowledge about seeds. Recognition of this knowledge entails considerable consequences for current perceptions about seed, as well as associated production practices and commercialization. These consequences are of both a symbolic and cognitive order, and affect the entire seed system, the very identity of those involved in seed experimentation and the definition of what exactly constitutes a “good” seed. After a brief description of the circumstances leading to the “lock-in” of the conventional, dominant seed system, we will consider four issues arising from the selection, propagation, and circulation of non-industrially produced seed…
