Cryotechnologies become even more important when donated milk has to be preserved for the feeding of hospitalized babies or when, in the form of milk probiotics, it enters the realms of scientific research and industrial production. However, attention to cold only offers one side of the picture, as thawing and heating are essential processes in human milk circulation too. Drawing on research on milk banking practices in Spain, we present three instances where technologies of cold and heat are applied to human milk or its components: hospital banks that collect milk from donors; the practices of lactating women who donate part of their milk to hospital banks, share it informally with other women, or participate in clinical research; and biophar...

Introduction: The media play a fundamental role when it comes to promoting blood donation and building the symbolic values and contents associated with it. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the ways in which press treats blood donation and other issues related to transfusion medicine, based on an analysis of news published in the main newspapers of Spain during the year 2016. Methods: From a search conducted in the newspapers El Pais, El Mundo, ABC, La Vanguardia, El Confidencial and eldiario.es, 332 news items were selected. A simple frequency statistical analysis was performed, as well as a content analysis. Results: News items were classified by topic, finding that 45.5% of the news referred campaigns and calls for donation; 26.8% addressed organizational issues related to transfusion services and resources;19.6% dealt with medical research and therapeutic innovations; and 11.4% addressed didactic or educational issues. In addition, 24.4% of the news explicitly mentioned values such as altruism, generosity or solidarity, while 29.8% referred to specific territories or made comparisons between autonomous communities. Conclusions: We identified five functions that newspapers fulfill regarding the promotion and symbolic construction of blood donation: appealing, didactic, futuristic, ideological and construction of collective identities.

We present and analyze three practices where human breast milk is stored and circulated: the "12 de Octubre" human milk bank, set in a neonatology unit and based on altruistic donations; informal human milk sharing among mothers; and drug-development practices that use donated human milk as a source of probiotics. Our analysis show that these practices rely on complex socio-technical assemblages, which are also characterised by hybrid zones and points of intersection between them. By understanding bacteria as a boundary object, we analyze the entanglements, disentanglements and re-entanglements of microbiota in the mechanisms of human milk bio-objectification that each of these biobanking practices entails. The distinctions or confusions between "virtuous" and "wicked" bacteria are part of a complex choreography where political, technical and sociocultural aspects get entangled.

Objective: To identify some of the difficulties, challenges, and strategies experienced in public blood banks currently, based on regional perspectives in Spain and Brazil.
Methods: Interviews with eleven managers/professionals from blood banks of the Autonomous Communities of Madrid, Extremadura and Catalonia (Spain) and the State of Bahia (Brazil) were conducted.
Results: Two groups of difficulties were identified: availability of structure and resources; and recruitment and loyalty of donors. Challenges: to recruit and retain new donors, especially young people; to maintain sufficient stock of rare blood types and have blood products available; to deal with emerging pathologies arising from migration and globalization; to ensure the rational use of blood; to manage services with limited autonomy over financial resources; to deal with different stakeholders. The following strategic lines stood out: the use of several resources to raise awareness and loyalty of donors; the concentration of technology and procedures in coordinating centers; the implantation of public plasmapheresis programs and the utilization of different means to establish relations with different actors.
Conclusion: Respecting the regional peculiarities, the results can be used for the reflection and implementation of various actions aimed at blood donation and self-sufficiency in other regions of the world.

Employed in existing haematological therapies, but also loaded with potentialities for future uses, cord blood has been lately the focus of a regulatory debate which confronts public and private forms of biobanking. This article explores the political and anthropological side of this debate, describing the ways in which different health practices related to the umbilical cord (and to its symbolic sibling, the placenta) have been involved in processes of societal production and reproduction. Through the use of ethnological and historical data, and their comparison with current practices, I contend that the technical manipulation of cords and placentas goes much longer into the past than what a first glance suggests, and that these two objects can be understood as biological spaces in which forms of social belonging and versions of the societal bond are at play. The current conflict between public and private cord blood banks is therefore interpreted as part of a longer history of bodily practices, and as reflecting recent mutations in the biopolitical constitution of advanced liberal societies.

Regulatory frameworks for these private services vary worldwide. This paper looks at the recent regulation of cord blood banking in Spain,
taking this example as representative of some of the dilemmas currently faced by national regulatory agencies over biotechnological innovations. The Spanish case shows how, paradoxically, an attempt at producing a nationally comprehensive and rigorous regulatory order has led to the development of unregulated trans-national markets. This disjuncture problematises the traditional identification in transplantation practices between the nation-state, the social body and the solidarity of a national population. The paper ends by suggesting an interpretation of the cord blood case as part of recent mutations in biopolitics.

In the light of recent studies such as Camille Bacon-Smith's Science Fiction Culture and John Tulloch and Henry Jenkins's Science Fiction Audiences, and in the context of Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical work on the notion of the literary field, this paper surveys the problem of the relationship between sf and mainstream literature, with special attention to the positioning of fandom. The case of the sf field in Spain, which is currently enjoying a period of expansion and a publishing boom that makes this problem increasingly relevant, is analyzed through interviews with writers, editors, and fans. I argue that the various definitions of the genre espoused by different actors in the field function as differing responses from within sf to the problem of exclusion from the mainstream.

The article focuses on parents’ contributions to the bioeconomy as providers of bodily tissues—stem cells, blood, breast milk or other samples of biological materials—to be preserved, employed in research or used to produce bio-objects by bioeconomic companies. We draw on recent STS and feminist writing on care to argue that thinking through care allows for a more nuanced approach to the analysis of citizens’ and patients’ emergent forms of subjectivity and agency brought about by new biotechnologies.

Numerous studies have analysed sociodemographic characteristics, drug-use patterns or consequences of chemsex, but less research has been carried out to describe possible variations in the ways chemsex is practised. In the context of a broader qualitative study about chemsex in Madrid (Spain), we sought to explore differences among types of chemsex sessions.
Methods: 11 in-depth interviews and two triangular focus groups (N = 7) were conducted with self-identifying GMSM between the ages of 22–46 who lived in Madrid and claimed to have engaged in chemsex during the last two years. Interviews and focus groups were recorded, transcribed and subjected to thematic analysis and sociological discourse analysis.
Results: We identified four different types of chemsex sessions – “anonymous sessions”, “chill-sex”, “semi-closed parties among networks of friends” and “chemsex in saunas or other sex on premise venues (SPVs)” – which present differences in how they are arranged, in the way they develop and in the meanings their participants ascribe to them. They also involve different degrees and forms of exposure to risk, as well as other peculiarities that, in some cases, may even function as factors of protection.
Conclusion: This study highlights the need to elaborate a more detailed description of chemsex, since not all forms of practicing chemsex are equivalent or involve equal forms of risk. Risk reduction strategies and other HIV prevention activities would benefit from considering internal variations among forms of chemsex practice.

Therapeutic advance achieved over the last fifteen years in addressing HIV and AIDS correlate with changes in the subjective experiences of persons with HIV and in the sociocultural imaginary of HIV infection. This paper reports findings on two areas: the current typology of HIV patients in the Spanish case and the evolution of the perception of HIV among PLWHA.
Methods: Qualitative study in eight Spanish cities (October 2010-
March 2011). We conducted 9 focus groups and 30 in-depth interviews with PLWHA of different ages and length of treatment, all of them under medical care. Interviews and focus group were transcribed and narrative and discursive data were subjected to sociological analysis.
Results: We suggest a classification of 7 different collectives of persons with HIV in the Spanish context, which reflect different historical periods in the epidemiology of the infection as well as the evolution of treatments and of the experiences of those infected. In recent times there have been significant changes in the social system of images associated with HIV, which point to an increasingly debilitated image of chronicity and to a decline in the perception of its danger to health.
Conclusions: But this new imaginary does not distribute equally
among all persons with HIV. On the contrary, there is a certain polarization of images, essentially between the two sub-groups most epidemiologically relevant among newly diagnosed HIV patients in Spain: younger men who have sex with men (<30-35 years) and immigrants.

Conclusion: Respecting the regional peculiarities, the results can be used for the reflection and implementation of various actions aimed at blood donation and self-sufficiency in other regions of the world.
taking this example as representative of some of the dilemmas currently faced by national regulatory agencies over biotechnological innovations.
