Cursó estudios de Bachillerato en el instituto Nicolás Salmerón de Almería y de Filología Hispánica en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid donde se doctoró con la tesis "Madrid como escenario literario en la novela española contemporánea".Ha sido profesor de Lengua y Literatura en el Instituto Emilio Castelar, en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares y profesor visitante en la Universidad de Relaciones Internacionales de Moscú (Rusia) y en la Universidad de Bretaña, (Francia). Trabajó como traductor de novelas francesas del siglo XIX, y más tarde de ensayos sobre cine.En 1996 publicó el "Diccionario práctico del comentario de textos literarios". Aquella obra dio paso a una investigación socio-lingüística, y seis años más tarde apareció, fruto de una intensa investigación, el "Diccionario Espasa de Lenguas del mundo" y más tarde tres ensayos sobre los cambios de las lenguas, "Historia de las lenguas hispánicas", "Breve historia de las lenguas del mundo" y "Las batallas de la eñe". En estas obras defiende la evolución natural de las lenguas y la dificultad del poder político para imponerlas. Introduce el término ambilingüe para designar a aquellos hablantes que muestran la misma destreza en el uso de dos lenguas, frente a bilingüe, que es el hablante que añade a la propia conocimientos de otra. Clasifica a las lenguas en tres grupos. Las vehiculares, las independientes y las condicionadas. Las primeras son aquellas que son elegidas para servir de instrumento de comunicación entre hablantes de lenguas distintas, como el inglés o el francés, y en su día el latín. Las independientes cuentan, fundamentalmente, con hablantes monolingües, aunque muchos de ellos puedan ser bilingües. Es el caso del alemán o el ruso, y también del italiano o el polaco. Y las terceras, las condicionadas, pertenecen a hablantes ambilingües, es decir que necesitan dos lenguas para satisfacer o completar sus necesidades inmediatas de comunicación, es el caso de los hablantes de bretón (y francés), galés (e inglés) o gallego (y español).En su actividad como lexicólogo redactó el "Diccionario Temático del Español" y diez años más tarde el "Diccionario Ideológico – Atlas léxico de la lengua española", tal vez la clasificación más cuidada y exhaustiva de las voces y expresiones del español de España y de América en todas las épocas. Para muchos, continuidad del "Diccionario Ideológico" de Julio Casares. El Atlas léxico, único en la organización y colocación de las palabras, permite buscar voces través de minuciosos campos semánticos, unos mil seiscientos, que reflejan todas las parcelas de significado del mundo que nos envuelve. Al mismo tiempo distingue y acota el uso general de los términos, el geográfico, el diacrónico o el sociocultural.En 1991 escribió su primera novela, "Aires de tímida doncella", y dos años después la segunda, "Marta y los otros". Inició su aportación a la literatura en 1999 con la "Enciclopedia de la Novela Española", un tratado que resume y analiza más de seiscientas novelas de todas las épocas. Luego ha publicado dos estudios teóricos sobre la novela: uno que toma como ejemplo a Fortunata y Jacinta de Pérez Galdós (en "Cómo se hizo una novela") y otro que toma como modelo a "La Regenta" de Clarín (en "Teoría y práctica de la novela")Ha sido crítico literario y columnista en Diario 16.Ha siso es vicepresidente de la Asociación Comenius de Enseñantes Europeos, profesor del Liceo Francés de Madrid y miembro de la Sociedad Española de Lingüística. En la actualidad (2020) es Presidente de la Asociación Europea de Profesores de Español, Director de la revista "El español por el mundo" y Miembro de la Dirección y colaborador de la revista "Archiletras".
