Angel Ruiz
Born in Costa Rica, Ángel Ruiz is a specialist in the History and Philosophy of Mathematics, and in various topics of Mathematics Education, especially the curriculum.
He is a retired professor from the School of Mathematics of the University of Costa Rica, where he founded the Center for Mathematical and Metamathematics Research in 1997 and was its director until 2012.
Together with Hugo Barrantes and Michael Josephy he was the producer of the Spanish translation of Carl Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, published by the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences.
He has more than 400 academic publications (including 36 books).
He has been a guest speaker at more than 180 in-person events in 25 countries on all continents.
He inspired and directed the development and implementation of the national mathematics school curriculum in Costa Rica (grades 1-12) officially in force since 2012.
He is the only Latin American who has held the vice presidency of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction ICMI for two terms.
He was for 8 years a member of the Commission for Developing Countries of the International Mathematical Union IMU.
Ángel was the president of the Inter-American Committee of Mathematics Education 2007-2023. President of its International Council from 2024.
Since 2012 he has been the leader of the Central American and Caribbean Mathematics Education Network.
