Sabine E Apitz
With more than three decades’ experience in marine and environmental research, policy support and consulting in academic, government and business sectors, Dr. Apitz is recognized in the U.S. and in Europe as a leader in the use of scientific and decision-making tools to support landscape, river basin and coastal environmental management and restoration, stakeholder involvement in management decisions and the development of regulatory policy frameworks and objectives. Over the past nearly three decades, Dr. Apitz has focused on the evolving question of how regulatory agencies can be more transparent in their use of science to evaluate and manage human impacts on ecosystems.
Technical expertise includes the preparation of multi-scale, multi-stressor and ecosystem-based assessment and decision frameworks; approaches for integrating multi-investigator studies to support specific regulatory or management questions; assessment of both freshwater and marine sediment and ecological environments; prospective and retrospective ecological risk assessment (ERA); ecosystem response (EcoResA) and regional assessment (EcoRegA); ecosystem service (EsS)-based assessment; design, review and synthesis of integrated environmental field studies; participation in environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA); and, evaluation of issues addressing environmental security such as landscape and water use and scarcity and sustainability of catchment and coastal ecosystem services. A particular specialty is providing cross-disciplinary and cross-organisational links that bridge the gaps between scientists, engineers, policy makers and the public. As such, much of Dr. Apitz’ work is carried out in collaboration with private consultancies, universities, NGOs and government agencies.
