Beth Oppenheim
Beth Oppenheim-Chan is a postdoctoral researcher and an international development professional, having worked for NGOs for the past 11 years in program management, development and evaluation. She holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town in human geography. She was the recipient of the university’s Faculty of Science Fellowship, and conducted her doctoral research in local communities in and around Maputo Mozambique.
Her particular research focus includes issues of community giving, indigenous philanthropy in Africa, and the geographies of morality and responsibility as it relates to African communities. She holds a Master’s Degree in International Development & Humanitarian Assistance from New York University, and has participated in several international conferences on her work, including the Oxford Conference on Economic Geography, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations Third Sector Research Conference in the UK, the Royal Geographical Society Annual International Conference and the Applied Geography Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States.
