I am a Professor of Ancient History at the University of Cyprus, Department of History and Archaeology (since 2017). I studied Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at the University of Perugia (1983-1990) (summa cum laude). I continued my studies at the University of Freiburg i. Br. (1992-1995), with a PhD in Ancient History (summa cum laude). Since 1998 I have been teaching at the University of Cyprus as Assistant and Associate Professor (2004-2017). In 2013 I founded the Post-Graduate programme in Ancient History. My scientific interests include Greek and Roman History in the East, Alexander and Hellenistic History, as well as Topography and monuments of Cyprus and the Near East. I have published about 60 papers in five languages and 4 books and another 1 forthcoming. My work is focused on aspects of political, social and economic history of the Ancient world, by evaluating the contribution of the written sources and the monuments, thus combining History and Archaeology. As far as ancient sites are concerned, I have worked on Athens, Delos, Pergamon, Cyprus (Nea Paphos, Salamis, Kourion, Amathous, Kition, Lapethos, Chytroi), Alexandria, Tyre and other sites in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraqi Kurdistan).

Hill, a bien voulu être négatif en ce qui concernait la question de Ptolémée Eupator, fils du Ptolémée VI Philomêtor et de CléopIatre II, « vice-roy » ou même Roi de Chypre après l'avril de 152 et avant le janvier que 150 av. J.-Ch. Bien que le savant anglais acceptait que les papyrus indiquaient l'association d'Eupâtor en tant que Roi à côté de son père au plus tôt en avril 152, alors qu'en juillet de 150 av. J.-Ch. Eupâtor se serait désormais mort, il concluait paradoxalement : « Unfortunately the evidence for the presence of Eupator in Cyprus is not entirely convincing ». C'était une solution trouvée à la hâte, car en 1949 n'avaient pas été encore fait des progrès au domaine de l'étude de l'architecture ptolémaïque, comme ceux-ci qu'on imposait la fouille du « Tomb 1979/1 » = no. 8 dans le terrain des « Tombeaux des Rois » de Nea Paphos par S. Hadjisavvas. Par cette étude on cherche d'établir la chronologie du complexe architecturale des tombeaux à hypogées, mais surtout de ce tombeau à dé, en employant trois critères : (a) La topographie ; (b) L'architecture, par rapport à des exemplaires bien datés de Délos ; (c) les empreintes sur les amphores rhodiennes, à partir du catalogue raisonnée donné par C. Barker ; (d) les éléments d'architecture provenant du Tombe no. 8, ramassés sous une sorte de magazine à l'ouvert ; (e) l'évaluation de la fondation du no. 8 rasée au sol de la surface ; (f) les trouvailles, à savoir les deux aigles, signe royal des Ptolémées. Je proposerai, donc, d'assigner « Tomb 1979/1 », qui n'a pas un peristylium, à Ptolémée VII Eupâtor qui, bien qu'il soit mort tout à fait à Chypre en 150 av. J.-C., était déifié encore de son vivant à Chypre même. Cela nous permettra de bien restituer un document papyrologique exceptionnel pour l'histoire des Lagides, le P.Oxy. XIX 2222. Je procéderais, enfin, à l'examen du type architecturale du monument funéraire à étages-mausolée.

Α) ΤΟ ΠΡΟΒΛΗΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΧΡΟΝΟΛΟΓΗΣΗΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΔΡΥΤΙΚΩΝ ΜΥΘΩΝ ΤΗΣ ΚΥΠΡΟΥ Για τους αρχαίους Έλληνες η μετανά... more Α) ΤΟ ΠΡΟΒΛΗΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΧΡΟΝΟΛΟΓΗΣΗΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΔΡΥΤΙΚΩΝ ΜΥΘΩΝ ΤΗΣ ΚΥΠΡΟΥ Για τους αρχαίους Έλληνες η μετανάστευση των Αχαιών του Ομήρου μετά τον Τρωϊκό πόλεμο από την Πελοπόννησο και την Αττική στην Κύπρο και ήταν και ονομάστηκε «αποικισμός» 1. Η μετάφραση του ελληνικού όρου με τον αγγλικό Colonization είναι εσφαλμένη, αφού στην ελληνική ο όρος δεν υποδηλώνει «αποικιοκρατικές» προθέσεις μιας οιονεί επεκτατικής κυριαρχίας 2. Από το 1973 μέχρι το 1994 η έρευνα επικεντρώθηκε στην απόδειξη του αποικιακού φαινομένου στην Κύπρο μέσω της αρχαιολογικής επιστήμης. Το οικοδόμημα που έκτισε ο Β. Καραγεώργης θεμελιώθηκε πάνω στην αρχή ότι ο ελληνικός αποικισμός στην Κύπρο όντως αποδεικνύεται 3. Αυτό διδάσκεται μέχρι σήμερα στην Μέση Εκπαίδευση της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας. Τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια καλλιεργήθηκε αντίθετα η άποψη ότι αυτό όχι μόνον δεν αποδεικνύεται, αλλά και ότι δεν πρόκειται καν για αποικισμό, καθώς παραμένει αναπάντητο το ζητούμενο ως προς τον υλικό πολιτισμό-material culture, δίχως αρχαιολογική ορατότητα 4. Η μικρή συμβολή μου εδώ, μέσα από τα κείμενα, πηγάζει από την παρατήρηση ότι μόνον οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες συνέγραψαν Κτίσεις για την άφιξη και την εγκατάσταση Ελλήνων στην Κύπρο. (Karageorghis 2005), thus proving the definite momentum of the Phoenician settlement in Cyprus at Kition, which would be therefore a colony politically dependent from Tyre. Apart from the historical problem, whether there has been a Phoenician colonization in Cyprus promoted by Tyre or not, denied by Iacovou (Iacovou 2021, 292-299; 306; Fourrier 2016, 132)1, which cannot be solved without the written sources and the tradition of Flavius Josephus going back through Menander to the Tyrian Annals and the King's List, this chronology is too approximative, based on the grounds of the discovery in 1969 of a fragmentary Red Slip Phoenician vase found in the temple courtyard (in the destruction layer and not in the bed of foundation), engraved with a dedication to Lady Astarte and dated by P. Bikai even in 750 B.C. (Bikai 2003, 10). This is only the terminus ante quem for the building of the Temple of Astarte. From Justinus-Pompeius

Prima di riaffrontare il problema dell'evidenza archeologica dei templi fenici e «pre-fenici» di ... more Prima di riaffrontare il problema dell'evidenza archeologica dei templi fenici e «pre-fenici» di Kition (Fig. 1), bisogna riprendere in considerazione i dati storiografici che attestano una cronologia assoluta per la fondazione di Cartagine, perché nel racconto di Giustino, Elissa si ferma ad un insediamento fenicio preesistente a Cipro, prima di continuare alla volta di Cartagine. Ciò vuole dire che la cronologia archeologica di Kition, con cui va certamente identificato l'insediamento fenicio che accolse Elissa, deve per forza di cose essere controllata alla luce della cronologia datane dalla storiografia per Cartagine. Le cronologie di fondazione di Cartagine sono due: quella «bassa» e quella «alta»2. Sia la cronologia prefabia 1 Fabio Pittore datò la fondazione di Roma 'nel primo anno dell'ottava Olimpiade' ossia nel 748/747 a.C., a detta di Dionigi di Alicarnasso I 74, 1 (FGrHist 809 F 3a); Dionigi di Alicarnasso stesso fissava in I 71, 5 la fondazione di Roma 432 anni dopo la presa di Troia, nell'anno della settima Olimpiade, quindi nel 752 a.C., prendendo a riferimento il primo anno olimpico 776 a.C.; Dionigi I 74, 2 riportava anche la cronologia di Catone (HRR F 17 Peter), che collocava infatti la fondazione 432 anni dopo la presa di Troia; per Varrone il 754/3 a.C. (cf. FGrHist 809 F 3b = Solin. Coll. I, 27) era il risultato dei 245 anni ab Urbe condita trascorsi tra i primi consoli e l'inizio dei leggendari sette re, cui Dionigi attribuiva altresì un intervallo di 244 anni; cf. F.

complexe architecturale « Asklepiéion »-« Odéon » de l'Agora romaine Le long de l'axe E-O sur l'a... more complexe architecturale « Asklepiéion »-« Odéon » de l'Agora romaine Le long de l'axe E-O sur l'aile Ouest du quadriportique de l'Agora romaine de Nea Paphos (Fig. 1), séparée à l'origine par le portique Ouest à travers une rue à colonnades, sont disposés l'un après l'autre le soi-disant « Odéon » et trois larges espaces délimités par des hauts murs verticaux : (A)-(B), de forme rectangulaire, (C), de plan longitudinal (Fig. 2). Ils répondent apparemment au même modulus donné par leur largeur, le diamètre de l'Odéon et la côte de l'Agora (24 + 24 + 24 x 2 = 48 + 48 x 2 = 96 m). Ces espaces se présentent à l'état actuel pour la majeure partie de leur surface au-dessous de leur dallage d'origine, en contact direct avec le rocher naturel, car le soussol a disparu en plusieurs points, comme s'il avait été soumis à une opération préliminaire de nettoyage. Cette première observation est gênante car la succession des phases archéologiques n'est plus visible, le complexe étant implanté sur le terrain vierge après avoir arraché toute phase antérieure, comme si celui-ci était l'état originel. Le complexe, qui donne pourtant l'impression de créer une remarquable unité urbaine, fut fouillé par K. Nikolaou pour le Department of Antiquities of Cyprus pendant les années 1968 et 1978. The turning point in the history of the Ptolemies is the abandonment of the naval and commercial ... more The turning point in the history of the Ptolemies is the abandonment of the naval and commercial hegemony in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean at the time of Ptolemy IV Philopator. This fact constituted the preamble for the conscious defensive policy of Ptolemy V Epiphanes and Ptolemy VI Philometor. Egypt and Cyprus were not simply considered as united entities but as an untouchable interdependent axis. The more the Ptolemies pursued a policy of 'association' towards the natives in Egypt, the more the position of Cyprus (as the last stronghold on the outside of the Empire) became enhanced as the 'red line' and an effective 'rescue' refuge'. The military regime of Ptolemy VIII Physkon had the possession of Cyprus as a condition. By the time of Ptolemy IX Lathyrus, economic recovery was reached.

The mosaics of the «House of Aion» at Nea Paphos discovered in 1983 represent: (a) Leda with Zeus... more The mosaics of the «House of Aion» at Nea Paphos discovered in 1983 represent: (a) Leda with Zeus in form of a swan; (b) Dionysus as infant in the lap of Hermes; (c) the beauty contest between Cassiopeia, queen of Aethiopia and mother of Andromeda, and the Nereids with Aion, Sol and Luna presiding as judges; (d) a Dionysiac procession consisting of Maenads and Satyrs; (e) the judgment of Marsyas whose pride in his mastery of the aulos resulted in hybris against Apollo. Following a survey of the dating of the mosaics and the possible historical context in which they were created, the interpretation of the images is discussed based on numerous parallels in monuments and literary texts. The handling of the Cassiopaea myth is compared with Lucian (Dial. Mar. 14, 4). The Dionysos' mysteries and the birth of Dioscuri are seen as a reflection of the cult of the Roman god Aion, and its connection with the Ludi saeculares is discussed: the games probably date 348 A. D., when Constantius II celebrated the jubelee of Rome. The presence of Aion on the central panel would then reflect the conflict between Pagans and Christians in Cyprus.

Καραγεώργης θεμελιώθηκε πάνω στην αρχή ότι ο ελληνικός αποικισμός στην Κύπρο όντως αποδεικνύεται 3. Αυτό διδάσκεται μέχρι σήμερα στην Μέση Εκπαίδευση της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας. Τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια καλλιεργήθηκε αντίθετα η άποψη ότι αυτό όχι μόνον δεν αποδεικνύεται, αλλά και ότι δεν πρόκειται καν για αποικισμό, καθώς παραμένει αναπάντητο το ζητούμενο ως προς τον υλικό πολιτισμό-material culture, δίχως αρχαιολογική ορατότητα 4. (Karageorghis 2005), thus proving the definite momentum of the Phoenician settlement in Cyprus at Kition, which would be therefore a colony politically dependent from Tyre. Apart from the historical problem, whether there has been a Phoenician colonization in Cyprus promoted by Tyre or not, denied by Iacovou (Iacovou 2021, 292-299; 306; Fourrier 2016, 132)1, which cannot be solved without the written sources and the tradition of Flavius Josephus going back through Menander to the Tyrian Annals and the King's List, this chronology is too approximative, based on the grounds of the discovery in 1969 of a fragmentary Red Slip Phoenician vase found in the temple courtyard (in the destruction layer and not in the bed of foundation), engraved with a dedication to Lady Astarte and dated by P. Prima di riaffrontare il problema dell'evidenza archeologica dei templi fenici e «pre-fenici» di ... more Prima di riaffrontare il problema dell'evidenza archeologica dei templi fenici e «pre-fenici» di Kition (Fig. 1), bisogna riprendere in considerazione i dati storiografici che attestano una cronologia assoluta per la fondazione di Cartagine, perché nel racconto di Giustino, Elissa si ferma ad un insediamento fenicio preesistente a Cipro, prima di continuare alla volta di Cartagine. Ciò vuole dire che la cronologia archeologica di Kition, con cui va certamente identificato l'insediamento fenicio che accolse Elissa, deve per forza di cose essere controllata alla luce della cronologia datane dalla storiografia per Cartagine. Le cronologie di fondazione di Cartagine sono due: quella «bassa» e quella «alta»2. Sia la cronologia prefabia 1 Fabio Pittore datò la fondazione di Roma 'nel primo anno dell'ottava Olimpiade' ossia nel 748/747 a.C., a detta di Dionigi di Alicarnasso I 74, 1 (FGrHist 809 F 3a); Dionigi di Alicarnasso stesso fissava in I 71, 5 la fondazione di Roma 432 anni dopo la presa di Troia, nell'anno della settima Olimpiade, quindi nel 752 a.C., prendendo a riferimento il primo anno olimpico 776 a.C.; Dionigi I 74, 2 riportava anche la cronologia di Catone (HRR F 17 Peter), che collocava infatti la fondazione 432 anni dopo la presa di Troia; per Varrone il 754/3 a.C. (cf. FGrHist 809 F 3b = Solin. Coll. I, 27) era il risultato dei 245 anni ab Urbe condita trascorsi tra i primi consoli e l'inizio dei leggendari sette re, cui Dionigi attribuiva altresì un intervallo di 244 anni; cf. F.

Ils répondent apparemment au même modulus donné par leur largeur, le diamètre de l'Odéon et la côte de l'Agora (24 + 24 + 24 x 2 = 48 + 48 x 2 = 96 m). Ces espaces se présentent à l'état actuel pour la majeure partie de leur surface au-dessous de leur dallage d'origine, en contact direct avec le rocher naturel, car le soussol a disparu en plusieurs points, comme s'il avait été soumis à une opération préliminaire de nettoyage. Cette première observation est gênante car la succession des phases archéologiques n'est plus visible, le complexe étant implanté sur le terrain vierge après avoir arraché toute phase antérieure, comme si celui-ci était l'état originel. The turning point in the history of the Ptolemies is the abandonment of the naval and commercial ... more The turning point in the history of the Ptolemies is the abandonment of the naval and commercial hegemony in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean at the time of Ptolemy IV Philopator. This fact constituted the preamble for the conscious defensive policy of Ptolemy V Epiphanes and Ptolemy VI Philometor. Egypt and Cyprus were not simply considered as united entities but as an untouchable interdependent axis. The more the Ptolemies pursued a policy of 'association' towards the natives in Egypt, the more the position of Cyprus (as the last stronghold on the outside of the Empire) became enhanced as the 'red line' and an effective 'rescue' refuge'. The military regime of Ptolemy VIII Physkon had the possession of Cyprus as a condition. By the time of Ptolemy IX Lathyrus, economic recovery was reached.

The mosaics of the «House of Aion» at Nea Paphos discovered in 1983 represent: (a) Leda with Zeus... more The mosaics of the «House of Aion» at Nea Paphos discovered in 1983 represent: (a) Leda with Zeus in form of a swan; (b) Dionysus as infant in the lap of Hermes; (c) the beauty contest between Cassiopeia, queen of Aethiopia and mother of Andromeda, and the Nereids with Aion, Sol and Luna presiding as judges; (d) a Dionysiac procession consisting of Maenads and Satyrs; (e) the judgment of Marsyas whose pride in his mastery of the aulos resulted in hybris against Apollo. Following a survey of the dating of the mosaics and the possible historical context in which they were created, the interpretation of the images is discussed based on numerous parallels in monuments and literary texts. The handling of the Cassiopaea myth is compared with Lucian (Dial. Mar. 14, 4). The Dionysos' mysteries and the birth of Dioscuri are seen as a reflection of the cult of the Roman god Aion, and its connection with the Ludi saeculares is discussed: the games probably date 348 A. D., when Constantius II celebrated the jubelee of Rome. The presence of Aion on the central panel would then reflect the conflict between Pagans and Christians in Cyprus.

Οι ιστορικοί νέο-θεσμικοί, σε αντίθεση με τους κοινωνιολόγους νεο-θεσμικούς, αντιμετωπίζουν τους θεσμούς και τις ιδέες υπό το πρίσμα της χωρο-χρονικής διάστασης. Έτσι, υπό την επίδραση συγκεκριμένων κρίσιμων, μεγάλων ή μικρότερων γεγονότων, προκύπτει η εξέλιξη ή η μετεξέλιξη ή η αλλαγή στους θεσμούς και στις ιδέες. Αυτή είναι η βασική διάσταση του βιβλίου του Α. Πάρπα, όταν διακρίνει περιόδους οικονομικών κύκλων στους θεσμούς της ναυτιλιακής οικονομίας της Κύπρου, ιστορική. Εφαρμογή δηλαδή μιας μακρο-οικονομικής θεωρίας που βασίζεται σε Θεσμούς-Δομές στα δεδομένα της Ιστορίας. Ανέκαθεν οι πολιτικοί θεσμοί ήταν εκείνοι που βρίσκονταν στο επίκεντρο των μακρο-οικονομικών αναλύσεων. Στην περίπτωση των New Institutions πρόκειται βασικά για τις δομές του Κράτους, που με τον ένα ή τον άλλο τρόπο εξασφαλίζουν σταθερότητα, ασφάλεια και φερεγγυότητα (structure induced equilibrium). Ως θεσμοί λογίζονται οι τυπικοί και οι άτυποι κανόνες, συμβάσεις και κώδικες συμπεριφοράς, στην πράξη οι επίσημοι τυπικοί κανόνες, π.χ. μηχανισμοί επιβολής κυρώσεων για τους παραβάτες των κανόνων, παρεχόμενες εγγυήσεις για την εφαρμογή των συμφωνηθέντων, τί είναι θεμιτό και τί αθέμιτο, στην ανάπτυξη λόγου χάρη των πολιτικών θεσμών της δημοκρατίας, στις συνέπειες των θεσμικών μεταρρυθμίσεων και του θεσμικού πλαισίου γενικότερα, όσον αφορά π.χ. τα αποτελέσματα των διαδικασιών λήψης αποφάσεων στην ΕΕ. Ένα νέο πλαίσιο ανάγνωσης της οικονομίας της αρχαιότητας εμφανίστηκε στον ορίζοντα και επί αυτού επικεντρώθηκε ο Α. Πάρπας εκμεταλλευόμενος την εμπειρία του από τις οικονομικές δομές και την λειτουργία του κράτους των Ηνωμένων Αραβικών Εμιράτων όπου εργάστηκε και διέπρεψε. Ο Πάρπας με το βιβλίο του αντικαθιστά τις ιδεολογίες, προχωρώντας σε αλλαγή παραδείγματος, σε έναν διαφορετικό τρόπο ανάγνωσης του παρελθόντος. Προσωπικά δεν είμαι οπαδός των μεγάλων θεωριών, που κατέληξαν σε ιδεολογίες, αφού εμπίπτουν στον χώρο της φιλοσοφίας της Ιστορίας παρά της Ιστορίας αυτής καθ᾽εαυτής. Ο νέο-μαρξισμός π.χ. δεν έχει να προσφέρει κάτι περισσότερο απ᾽ ό,τι προσέφερε. Προτιμώ την εμπειρική παρατήρηση, η οποία όμως καθίσταται ανεπαρκής στην περιγραφή των «κρυφών δομών», πέραν της πολιτικής ιστορίας, καθώς οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες εν προκειμένου μας άφησαν ως παρακαταθήκη μόνον τους Πόρους και τον Οικονομικό του Ξενοφώντος. Die Ausgrabung des Tumulus Kasta bei Amphipolis hat insofern besondere Bedeutung als man daraus f... more Die Ausgrabung des Tumulus Kasta bei Amphipolis hat insofern besondere Bedeutung als man daraus für hinreichend bezeugt halten kann, daß der Streit um die Nachfolge Alexanders nicht erst nach seinem Tode began, sondern eng mit dessen zukunftigen Plänen während der letzten Wochen seines Lebens zusammenhängt. Das ist allerdings schwer zu erfassen und kann lediglich auf der Basis indirekter Zeugnisse nachgewiesen werden. Eine dringende Frage stellt sich vor: Wovon sollte und könnte man ausgehen, um die Chronologie des Grabhügels festzustellen, bevor man eigentlich zum geschichtlichen Inhalt des Denkmals kommt? Beide methodologische Verfahren sind meines Erachtens gültig, wenn man die Interpretation der Ausgrabung des Tumulus Kasta bei Amphipolis in die richtige Bahn lenken möchte: Entweder fängt man mit der Berücksichtigung der Architektur, der Skuptur und der Mosaiken und ihrer Datierung an, um davon ausgehend einige feste Anhaltspunkte zu gewinnen, oder läuft man die politische Geschichte der Diadochen und das Problem des Gottesmenschentums im frühen Hellenismus deswegen durch, weil die riesigen Abmessungen des Tumulus eindeutig darauf hinweisen, daß eine Art von Heroisierung zugrunde liegt. Es wäre darum sinnvoller eine dialektische Methode anzuwenden, wobei die aus dem archäologischen Bereich zu entnehmenden und noch vorläufigen Ergebnisse dem Wissen politischen Geschichte gegenübergestellt werden, bevor man nochmals vornimmt, die Chronologie des Grabes zu überprüfen. Α) Ἡ χρονολόγηση τῆς «Οἰκίας τοῦ Διονύσου» Τὸ πρόβληµα τῆς «Οἰκίας τοῦ Διονύσου» εἶναι διττό, καθ... more Α) Ἡ χρονολόγηση τῆς «Οἰκίας τοῦ Διονύσου» Τὸ πρόβληµα τῆς «Οἰκίας τοῦ Διονύσου» εἶναι διττό, καθὼς ἀφορᾶ τόσο τὴν χρονολόγηση ὅσο καὶ τὴν ἑρµηνεία τῶν ψηφιδωτῶν, ἄν δεχθοῦµε ὅτι ἐπιδέχονται ἑρµηνείας. Οἱ χρονολογήσεις ποὺ προτάθηκαν εἶναι κυρίως δύο: τέλη τοῦ 2 ου αἰ. µ.Χ. (Μιχαηλίδης)· ἀρχὲς τοῦ 3 ου αἰ. µ.Χ. (Daszewski). Ἐκ πρώτης ὄψεως µπορεῖ νὰ µὴν ἔχει τόσο µεγάλη σηµασία ἡ ἀπόσταση δύο ἢ τριῶν δεκαετιῶν, ὅταν ὅµως πρόκειται γιὰ τὴ συγκεκριµένη περίοδο ἡ ἱστορικὴ προοπτικὴ ὑπαγορεύει νὰ κυριολεκτεῖ κανείς, καθὼς ὑπεισέρχεται τὸ θέµα τῆς παραχώρησης τῆς ρωµαϊκῆς πολιτείας σὲ ὅλους τοὺς κατοίκους τῆς Αὐτοκρατορίας διὰ τῆς constitutio antoniniana τοῦ 212 µ.Χ. καὶ ὁ συνεπαγόµενος ἐκρωµαϊσµός στό δίκαιο, στὰ ἤθη καιὶ στὸν πολιτισµὸ, ποὺ στὴν περίπτωση τῶν ἀνατολικῶν Ἐπαρχιῶν δὲν πρόκειται νὰ ὁδηγήσει καὶ στὸν ἐκλατινισµὸ παρὰ µόνον ἀπὸ τὸν Διοκλητιανὸ καὶ µετά. Μερικὲς πόλεις στὶς ἀνατολικὲς ἐπαρχίες εἶχαν ἤδη λάβει τὸν τιµητικὸ τίτλο τῆς colonia, ὅπως ἡ Πάφος Augusta Claudia Flavia, ἄλλες θὰ πάρουν τὸν τιµητικὸ τίτλο τῆς colonia romana µὲ ius italicum ἐπὶ Σεβήρων, ἀλλὰ στὴν πράξη ὁ καθ' ἑαυτὸς ρωµαϊκὸς ἀποικισµὸς εἶναι φαινόµενο ποὺ ἐξαντλεῖται µετὰ τὸ 212 µ.Χ. καὶ ὑποκαθίσταται ἀπὸ τὴν ὁλοένα καὶ µεγαλύτερη διάδοση τῆς ἀστικοποίησης καὶ τὴν αὔξηση τῆς βάσης τῆς ἀστικῆς τάξης τῶν honestiores. Ἡ διαίρεση τῆς ρωµαϊκῆς κοινωνίας σὲ δύο µεγάλες τάξεις, τοὺς honestiores καὶ τοὺς humiliores, πρακτικὰ, στὴν τάξη τῶν Συγκλητικῶν, τῶν ἱππέων καὶ τῶν decuriones τῶν πόλεων ἀπὸ τὴ µία πλευρὰ καὶ τὸ σύνολο τοῦ ὑπόλοιπου πληθυσµοῦ ἀπὸ τὴν ἄλλη, εἶναι φαινόµενο ποὺ εἶχε ἀρχίσει στὸ δεύτερο ἥµισυ τοῦ 2ου αἰ. µ.Χ., ἐπὶ Ἀντωνίνων. Στὶς Ἀνατολικὲς Ἐπαρχίες εἶναι οἱ τοπικοὶ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἑλληνικῶν πόλεων ποὺ ἀναλαµβάνουν τὴν ἀστικοποίηση, ἐκεῖ ὅπου αὐτὴ εἶναι περιορισµένη καὶ τὴν ἐνδυνάµωση ἐκεῖ ὅπου εἶναι δοκιµασµένη πρακτική. Ἐκ τῶν πραγµάτων ὁ ἐκρωµαϊσµὸς συνεπάγεται τὸν εξελληνισµὸ καὶ τῶν τελευταίων ἐναποµεινάντων θυλάκων γηγενῶν πολιτισµῶν στὴν Ἀνατολή, ἐνῶ οἱ τοπικοὶ εὐεργέτες διατρανώνουν τὴν πίστη τους στὴν αὐτοκρατορικὴ ἐξουσία δωρίζοντας στὴν πόλη τους, γυµνάσια, θέρµες, αγορές, ναούς, θέατρα. Ἡ ἵδρυση τῆς Νέας Πάφου: Τὰ δεδοµένα τοῦ προβλήµατος εἶναι τὰ ἀκόλουθα: 1) Τὸ 332 π.Χ. κατὰ τὴν π... more Ἡ ἵδρυση τῆς Νέας Πάφου: Τὰ δεδοµένα τοῦ προβλήµατος εἶναι τὰ ἀκόλουθα: 1) Τὸ 332 π.Χ. κατὰ τὴν πολιορκία τῆς Τύρου, ἡ Πάφος καὶ ὁ στόλος της ἀπουσιάζουν. Δὲν φαίνεται λάθος νὰ ὑποθέσουµε ὅτι ἡ πόλη δὲν εἶχε ἀκόµη µεταφερθεῖ ἀπὸ τὴν Παλαίπαφο στὴν Μαλούτενα. 2) Οἱ Κύπριοι βασιλεῖς ὑπῆρξαν χορηγοὶ στοὺς ἀγῶνες κατὰ τὴν ἐπιστροφὴ ἀπὸ τὴν Αἵγυπτο τὸ 331 π.Χ. Δὲν µνηµονεύεται βασιλεὺς Πάφου. 3) Ἡ περίεργη εἴδηση ποὺ περιέχεται στὸ Περὶ Ἀλεξάνδρου Τύχης, σύµφωνα µὲ τὴν ὁποία ὁ Ἀλέξανδρος διόρισε βασιλέα στὴν Πάφο ἕναν Ἀβδαλώνυµο, ἐπειδὴ τὸ γένος τῶν Κινυραδῶν εἶχε ἀφανιστεῖ, ἐλέγχεται ὡς ἐσφαλµένη καὶ δὲν εὐσταθεῖ. 4) Ἡ ἐπιγραφὴ ποὺ βρέθηκε τὸ 2005 στὸ Ἡραῖον τῆς Σάµου (SEG 57 815), δείχνει ὅτι ἤδη ὁ βασιλεὺς τῆς Πάφου πρέπει νὰ βρίσκοταν στὴν αὐλὴ τοῦ Αλεξάνδρου τὸ 324 π.Χ. 5) Στὴν ἐπιγραφὴ, ὁ βασιλεὺς τῆς Πάφου, µετὰ τὴν κατάληψη τῆς Ἀθήνας ἀπὸ τὸν Ἀντίπατρο τὸ φθινόπωρο τοῦ 322 π.Χ. καὶ τὴν ἐκχώρηση τῆς διευθέτησης τοῦ ζητήµατος τῆς ἐπιστροφῆς τῶν πολιτικῶν ἐξορίστων στοὺς βασιλεῖς Φίλιππο Γ΄ Ἀρριδαῖο καὶ Ἀλέξανδρο Δ΄, οὐσιαστικὰ στὸν Περδίκκα, ἐπεµβαίνει στὴν Σάµο ὑπὲρ τῶν Μακεδόνων καὶ τῶν Σαµίων. Οἱ Βασιλεῖς βρίσκονταν στὸ στρατόπεδο τοῦ Περδίκκα. Τὸ νέο θραῦσµα τῆς ἐπιγραφῆς ποὺ προσετέθη στὸ σωζόµενο τµῆµα τοῦ ψηφίσµατος λέει πάνω κάτω τὰ ἀκόλουθα: «φάνηκε σωστὸ στὸν Δῆµο-ἐπειδὴ-Νικοκλῆς ἢ Τίµαρχος Παφίων βασιλεὺς περὶ τὸν Δῆµον τὸν Σαµίων ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ εὐνοϊκὰ κείµενος τελεῖ καὶ κατ' ίδίαν πρὸς στοὺς προσερχόµενους σὲ αὐτὸν καὶ πρὸς ὅλους ἅπαντες χρήσιµο καθιστώντας τὸν ἑαυτὸ του καὶ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ἀλέξανδρο καὶ τοὺς µετ' αὐτοῦ ὑπόλοιπους Μακεδόνες καµµία σπουδὴ δὲν παρέλειψε, ὥστε ἐµεῖς

Η ΚΥΠΡΙΑΚΗ -ΑΜΑΘΟΥΣΙΑ ΠΑΡΑΔΟΣΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΛΑΤΡΕΥΤΙΚΟ ΑΓΑΛΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΝΕΜΕΣΕΩΣ ΤΟΥ ΡΑΜΝΟΥΝΤΟΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΑΤΤΙΚΗ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ ΤΟΠΩΝΥΜΙΟ ΛΕΜΕΣΟΣ, Συνέδριο Μητροπόλεως Λεμεσού 2018

1) Το µοναδικό σωζόµενο λατρευτικό ἀγαλµα του 5ου αι. π.Χ., έστω κι αν πρόκειται για θραύσµατα, ε... more 1) Το µοναδικό σωζόµενο λατρευτικό ἀγαλµα του 5ου αι. π.Χ., έστω κι αν πρόκειται για θραύσµατα, είναι εκείνο της Νεµέσεως του Αγορακρίτου, µαθητού του Φειδία, έργο του 430-425 π.Χ. Ο Γ. Δεσπίνης προέβη το 1971 στην ανασύσταση του αγαλµατικού τύπου, ταυτίζοντας τα σωζόµενα θραύσµατα και τον ίδιο τον αγαλµατικό τύπο επί τη βάσει ρωµαϊκών αντιγράφων. Η θεά φορά χειριδωτό χιτώνα µε κόλπο και απόπτυγµα, ενώ πέπλος επικρέµαται στον αριστερό της ώµο. Κρατούσε φιάλη στο προτεταµένο δεξί χέρι και κλαδί µηλιάς στο αριστερό, το οποίο ο Σουΐδας αποδίδει στην Αφροδίτη. Ο Παυσανίας περιγράφει στο 1, 33, 3 µε ακρίβεια την ανάγλυφη παράσταση των Αιθιόπων που κοσµούσε την στεφάνη της φιάλης. Άν και ο Δεσπίνης γνώριζε το υφιστάµενο πρόβληµα µε τον κυπριακό αργυρό στατήρα του Τιµοχάρεως, βασιλέα της Πάφου, που απεικονίζει γυναικείο άγαλµα σε παρόµοια στάση και µε τα ίδια χαρακτηριστικά, δεν πίστεψε ότι µπορεί και να βρισκόµαστε ενώπιον µιας κυπριακής παραλλαγής του αγαλµατικού τύπου της Νεµέσεως του Αγοράκριτου. Το νόµισµα, το οποίο χρονολογείται εσφαλµένα περί το 385 π.Χ., βεβαιώνει απολύτως την αντιγραφή του τύπου της αθηναϊκής Νεµέσεως στην Κύπρο. Ερωτηµατικό παραµένει, ωστόσο, µέσα σε ποιά ιστορικά συµφραζόµενα ανακινήθηκε το ζήτηµα της τιµωρίας των Περσών από τη Νέµεση στην Κύπρο. Ήδη ο E. Babelon είχε διαγνώσει ότι στον οπισθότυπο του νοµίσµατος, όπου και η δυσανάγνωστη κυπρο-συλλαβική επιγραφή Νι-κο-κε-λε-Ϝε-σο, απεικονίζεται λατρευτικό άγαλµα ἔνθρονου Διός που στηρίζεται σε σκήπτρο, ενώ στον εµπροσθότυπο που φέρει την επιγραφή του Τιµοχάρεως της Πάφου, παριστάνεται γυναικεία µορφή κατ' ενώπιον σε άγνωστο αγαλµατικό τύπο Αφροδίτης. Ο,τι δεν µπορεί, τέλος πάντων, να αµφισβητηθεί, είναι ότι η κοπή είναι διπλή, καθώς έγινε από κοινού από τον βασιλέα Τιµοχάρη της Πάφου και τον βασιλέα Νικοκλή της Σαλαµίνας. Μολονότι ο Hill χρονολογεί το νόµισµα µετά την Αντιαλκίδειο Ειρήνη του 387/386 π.Χ., η ανάρρηση του Νικοκλέους στον θρόνο της Σαλαµίνας µόλις το 374 π.Χ. επιβάλλει να χρονολογήσουµε την κοπή αµέσως µετά την ίδρυση της Β Αθηναϊκής Συµµαχίας, η οποία σηµατοδοτεί την ανασύσταση της αθηναϊκής ναυτικής ηγεµονίας, έστω κι αν η συγκυρία είναι στιγµιαία, ως ότου να αναλάβουν τα

Τρια χιλιόμετρα και επτακόσια μέτρα από τις εκβολές του Στρυμόνα ποταμού, δυτικά από τας Θρακίας ... more Τρια χιλιόμετρα και επτακόσια μέτρα από τις εκβολές του Στρυμόνα ποταμού, δυτικά από τας Θρακίας Πύλας που σχηματίζονται στα στενά του Νέστου ποταμού, βρίσκεται η αρχαία Αμφίπολις. Ο Ηρόδοτος περιγράφει την ευρύτερη περιοχή ως εξής, 7, 113: ἡ δὲ γῆ αὕτη ἡ περὶ τὸ Πάγγαιον ὄρος καλέεται Φυλλίς, κατατείνουσα τὰ μὲν πρὸς ἑσπέρην ἐπὶ ποταμὸν Ἀγγίτην ἐκδιδόντα ἐς τὸν Στρυμόνα, τὰ δὲ πρὸς μεσαμβρίην τείνουσα ἐς αὐτὸν τὸν Στρυμόνα. Φυλλὶς ήταν συνεπώς το αρχαιότερο γεωγραφικὸ όνομα της περιοχής στον κάτω ρού του Στρυμόνα. Αθηναϊκή κληρουχία που ιδρύθηκε το 438 π.Χ. από τον Άγνωνα, η Αμφίπολις καταλήφθηκε από τον Σπαρτιάτη Βρασίδα το 424-422 π.Χ. και παραδόθηκε στον Φίλιππο Β΄ το 358 π.Χ., όταν και ενσωματώθηκε στο μακεδονικό βασίλειο. Αν θέλει κανείς να κατανοήσει το βαθύτερο ιστορικό νόημα που είχε η κατοχή της Αμφιπόλεως πρέπει να ανατρέξει στον Παρά Πρεσβείας Λόγο του Αισχύνη, υπερασπιστικό και απολογητικό λόγο, που γράφτηκε και απαγγέλθηκε στο δικαστήριο το 342 π.Χ. Ο πόνος της Αθήνας για την απώλεια της Αμφίπολης, για τις πραγματικές προθέσεις του Φιλίππου Β΄ τις οποίες εκθείαζε ως υποτίθεται «φιλο-αθηναϊκές» ο Αισχύνης, όταν υποστήριζε ότι ο Φίλιππος θα απέδιδε δήθεν εκ νέου την Αμφίπολη στους Αθηναίους, και τις στηλίτευε «δημαγωγικά» ως «υποκριτικές» ο Δημοσθένης, κατηγορώντας τον Αισχύνη επί προδοσίᾳ για την στάση του στην πρεσβεία στην Πέλλα, μάλλον επανεμφανίστηκε, όπως θα προτείνω με επιφύλαξη, και μετά τον θάνατο του Αλεξάνδρου στις 13 Ιουνίου του 323 π.Χ., κατά τον Λαμιακό πόλεμο μεταξύ των Αθηναίων και των Μακεδόνων του Αντιπάτρου, το έτος 322 π.Χ., με ενδεχόμενη αφορμή μια κολοσσιαίου μεγέθους «πρόκληση» που ίσως να είχε και μνημειακές διαστάσεις, μιαν «αναιδέστατη θρασύτατη προσβολή» απέναντι στα ιερά και τα όσια της παραδοσιακής θρησκείας, την αποθέωση και την εξαναγκαστική διάδοση και επιβολή της λατρείας του Ηφαιστίωνα από τον Αντίπατρο, ένα επεισόδιο που συντάραξε την ελληνική κοινή γνώμη και το οποίο καταδικάζει εμμέσως ο ακραιφνής ριζοσπαστικός Υπερείδης στον Επιτάφιο Λόγο του: Λεωσθένης γὰρ ὁρῶν τὴν Ἑλλάδα πᾶσαν τεταπεινωμένην καὶ. .. . ἐπτη[χυ]ῖαν, κατεφθαρμένην παρὰ Φι[λίπ]που καὶ Ἀλεξάνδρου κατὰ [τῶν] πατρίδων τῶν αὑτῶν.
