Several studies have stated that Spanish is a language whose rhythmic patterns can be characterized as syllable-timed, however, other studies, both old and recent, have stated that Spanish has rhythm patterns closer to stress-timed languages.
Up to date, no studies have investigated this aspect of rhythm in Chilean Spanish. In this study, a corpus of read-aloud speech from 30 participants from different geographical areas in Chile is analysed. The analysis was conducted after obtaining quantitative metrics, developed recently in other studies, in order to give more precision and objectivity to the methods. Results show that Chilean Spanish is syllable-timed, although it displays values slightly closer to stress-timed languages
than peninsular Spanish. As to the effect of the geographic origin of the subjects, the differences observed were relatively small, which suggests that this type of variation is not of importance in Chilean Spanish rhythm, in read-aloud speech.

A protocol with several samples of the different pragmatic uses of the diminutive suffix in context was created. Using this protocol, a corpus of 250 lexical items with appreciative diminutive suffixes in context of controlled speech produced by 10 native Chilean Spanish speakers was obtained. Absolute length of the vowel /i/ for each token of the suffix was measured in milliseconds and the results were compared by statistical procedures. The results show that indeed there is an incidence of pragmatic value in length of the stressed vowel in Chilean Spanish diminutive suffix -ito.

This study is a quantitative analysis of the influence of style variable over realization of three historical variants in Chilean Spanish of /s/ phoneme, in order to determine the sociolinguistic status of each them. A sample of speech taken from news programs of Chilean television was used as the corpus. Besides, a clear procedure of spectrographical observation and identification of the three variants was defined. Also, using the concepts of domain, field, mode and tenor, an operative procedure of delimitation of style variable was defined. After the analysis, it is concluded that aspirated realization of /s/ is not an indicator, but the predominance of this variant is a regular and general tendency in all styles. There is a significant tendency of speakers to use the elision as an indicator of spontaneous speech and a very strong tendency to use the sibilant realization as an indicator as well –but non-spontaneous speech. Finally, a comparative study with the results of previous research in the same subject was made to conclude that those results are very similar.
