It is an attempt to understand the difficulties some of my students, who are (future) teachers, encounter in following simple written instructions. One may argue that the answer is probably related to their habits as “digital natives” (Prensky 2007). In the past, we presented as one of the characteristics of this “connected generation” (Cardoso 2013) the difficulty to concentrate and, therefore, to read long texts. However, when taking exams, these learners fail to follow even very short instructions, such as “write in ink” or “correct the following sentences”. On the other hand, these learners’ success at university depends on these short instructions. Moreover, being these students (future) teachers, we ...

A “camp” here means “an informal gathering of learners working together to discuss new ideas and concepts” (Sowell, 2019). MOOC Camps combine the positive aspects of MOOCs, such as high-quality of professional development and low cost for participants with the advantages of using the “camps”, such as adaptation to the local context and a simpler way of promoting interaction among participants, who consequently feel highly motivated to complete the online course (Cardoso, 2020). The aim of this presentation is to consider the effects of the physical distance imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic in the MOOC Camps been offered by an extension and research project developed at a public university in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (CEALD/UERJ) in partnership with the American Government (RELO-Brazil) since 2019. The main objectives of these MOOC camps are: (a) to promote language and methodology...

The shared fundamentals are 1) learning and development are societal-historical activities inherent to the nature of human beings; 2) being and identifying are functions of our total life, not only of episodic engagement with some task; 3) knowledge and knowing are integral to human active engagement with the world. Results indicate how different forms of participation provide opportunities for colearning and for developing critical reflexivity, ethical attitude, (pre)professional confidence and autonomy.
