We then sought to listen to a group of seven 5-year-old children about a topic that is part of their daily experiences — the family. Through observation of plays fostered, video recorded, and qualitatively analyzed by the researcher, children appear to be protagonists of their microcultures in early childhood education: they create characters and weave relationships constrained to a family scenario. Therefore, listening to children means allowing them to express affections, interests, conflicts, et cetera, taking them as evidence of their understanding and conceptions.

It exhibits the premises of the project, its initial idea, the stages carried out, the methodologies used, highlighting some contributions to reflect on the curriculum of early childhood education and the training of its professionals. An important facet of the project is that in both cities, Penedo and Évora, the existing cultural references should be recognized and valued as essential resources for educating children, for training the professionals and shaping the curriculum, as well as for interactions and dialogues with families and communities at large. The research and actions carried out within the scope of this project provide clues as to how children, early childhood education and its curriculum can dialogue with cultural heritage, recognizing it, valuing it and enhancing the experience of children in their territories so as to strengthen the sense of identity and belonging to the city.

This research uses the Sophos method, which combines the presentation of daily ECE films from contrasting contexts and their discussion in focus groups (FG), formed by people linked to the research field. The study is inspired by Jensen's research and involved the editing of two daily films of early childhood education, in Brazil and Denmark, and their exhibition to several FG. For this article, the comprehension of the presence of male professionals, based on the discussions that took place in seven FG held in the state of Alagoas, was analyzed in the light of gender theories. The results indicate that the male presence in IS still provokes reactions of strangeness, revealing the power of the method when confronting different experiences, familiar (Brazilian) and foreign (Danish).

This article presents the work of some groups that have been dedicated to investigate the issue internationally from various perspectives. It searched to identify their main focus of interest, methodologies, concepts, propositions and publications. In addition to expanding our theoretical and methodological references, dissemination of such information may strengthen initiatives that focus on supporting the recognition of a profession that keeps its specificities, but whose contours are not always visible, recognized and valued.

The project underlined issues related to both developed and developing countries, and proposed a new approach for an integrated system of ECEC. This model resulted in a paradigm shift related to responsibility for the care and education of the young children, which shifted from an exclusive attribution of the family to a task to be shared with society at large. This model was built on the legitimation of out-of home child socialization, making the upbringing process to become both a public and a private concern. The research pointed out the implications of this model for policy and program implementation and identified convergent and divergent tendencies among the countries analyzed. It also called attention to the main challenges and pitfalls that emerge in the path towards the elaboration of a coherent and consistent integrated policy.

The survey focused on family characteristics, child rearing practices, responsibility for child care and household, and day care availability. The study found that in regard to child rearing practices, the mothers valued routine, honesty, organization, and freedom of speech (despite ambiguity expressed by mothers about their children's autonomy) most highly. The survey also found that 45 percent of the mothers reported performing the household and child-rearing chores on their own, while 35 percent reported sharing these responsibilities with their husband; by contrast, fathers participated more in cultural, social, and educational tasks than mothers. Although the mothers were generally pleased with the public day care and preschool their children participated ...
