Many of these fields can be represented by the Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST), an approach used to model and explain linguistic phenomena and their implications. The goal of this article is thus twofold: firstly, it aims to present the CDST paradigm applied to language studies; and, secondly, departing from a complex dynamic perspective, it discusses sound variation and change as paramount and integral parts of the essence of natural languages. This account sheds light on new ways to address language and is fundamental to the understanding that languages are living organisms whose properties are constantly changing and evolving.

Insights from this area also have impact on the study of second language (L2) development and can feed the area of language teaching. Once language attrition may be of value for the study of language retention and maintenance, it can contribute to language teaching with long lasting results, more effective planning and syllabus design. In this perspective, as studies exploring L2 attrition are still limited, this article provides a synthesis of research on the area. By drawing from the Dynamic Model of Multilingualism and from the Threshold Hypothesis, it also explores the implications L2 attrition research has for language teaching with a view to establishing more informed language practices and policies.

To this end, 12 immigrants are compared to 10 standard southern British English monolinguals. Acoustic analysis of VOT duration is reported. The results demonstrated that the immigrants’ VOT values for English increased along with LOR. The bilinguals with the longest LOR revealed a production of English VOT within the range expected for the controls. These findings can be interpreted as evidence for language as a Complex Adaptive System, and for the hypothesis that the neuroplasticity and the cognitive mechanisms for language development remain intact during the lifespan.

We analyze the Voice Onset Time (VOT) of voiced and voiceless, bilabial and velar initial plosives in BP. There were 33 participants in the study (11 monolinguals of BP, 11 intermediate learners of English, and 11 advanced learners of English). All participants produced, individually, a reading task of words in BP. ANOVA tests demonstrated a significant difference among groups regarding the voiceless velar plosive, suggesting the occurrence of first language attrition in this segment. No significant differences between intermediate and advanced learners of English were found. These results, although suggesting that attrition is less common in contexts of L1 dominance, allow us to consider t...

Its underlying cognitive mechanisms are thus historically seen as distant from those of speech perception, usually assumed to be a passive process. However, dynamic perspectives on language congregate grammar and language use, approximate phonetics and phonology, and value the role of speech perception in language development. Recent studies argue that speech production and perception are overlaying or at least highly interacting. Some scholars claim that the link between these two processes surpasses the acoustics, as studies have revealed that action also has a role in language comprehension. Phonic gestures are not just mechanisms by means of which one experiences speech production, but are supporting to perception. In this perspective, models interested in L2 development face a twofold challenge: to amalgamate speech perception and production, and to consider that speech transcends the acoustics, since - in a dynamic frame of reference - phonetic-phonological representations are auditory, gestural and general. This paper aims at presenting evidence for a gesture-driven perspective to L2 speech development in which the gesture is a phonological primitive that pervades and connects speech perception and production. By emphasizing a gesture-driven point of view, this work presents congruent and incongruent tenets among some hegemonic models of L2 speech development and an ecological/dynamic account.
