In this sense the appeal for managing operational variables adequately is very attractive since these have a huge impact in the overall costs. Reportedly, one of the most expensive mining activities is the transportation of in situ material to its destination. In this regard, the correct management of the important operational variables coupled with the experience gathered in mining operations, allowed the development of a computer system aimed at helping to achieve these management objectives. This paper describes the relation between measurable variables and economic parameters obtained in one important large scale Brazilian mine and how they interact and relate to each other in order to facilitate the decision making process.
The use of time series as an additional tool in decision making for the oil industry has been est... more The use of time series as an additional tool in decision making for the oil industry has been established as a mechanism for predicting the behavior of crude oil price. Especially in Brazil, after the discovery in this decade of the pre-salt reservoirs, the estimate of the price of a crude oil barrel through the use of modern techniques can minimize risks in exploration and production of oil. The more appropriate pricing for crude oil aims to minimize the risks to the economic activity for both exporters and importers of oil. This paper presents six different methods for obtaining crude oil future prices i.e. Multiple regression (MR), Holt ́s method (HM), Holt-Winter (HW), Kalman filter (KF), Auto-Regression/Moving-Average (ARIMA) and stochastic simulation based on the use of the Monte Carlo method (SMC). The methods are compared to determine their advantages and disadvantages against each other, seeking to determine which of the generated models has the best potential to determine the future fair price of a barrel of oil. As a result, the most appropriate methodology capable of projecting a more precise future barrel oil fair price was determined, among the six alternatives studied.

The authors discuss their merits and pitfalls, explaining the reasons ERP systems fall short in the integration of the mine value chain and proposing a methodology to overcome their deficiencies. One key differentiation aspect of the mineral industry, is the uncertainty about ore quality until it is actually mined, which sets this whole industry apart from the rest of the manufacturing sector in terms of resource planning needs and control. This paper identifies the difficulties that standard ERP systems have in integrating the mine value chain through an exploratory study that includes a case study methodology denoting how ERP systems manage the functional areas of the mining industry, and how they fit into the mineral value chain Information Technology (IT) requirements. It also proposes a new concept that will allow to properly integrating the mine value chain beyond the ERP systems functionality, through the proper application of IT.

La construcción de pilas de acopio y de mezcla representa una alternativa valiosa para la planificación de minado permitiendo garantizar la calidad del concentrado y las especificaciones de la planta de tratamiento. Para satisfacer las especificaciones de leyes y tonelaje, y reducir las variaciones las pilas de acopio y mezcla cumplen un papel importante para la planificación de corto y largo plazo. La programación linear clásica viene siendo ampliamente utilizada en problemas de mezcla presentes en la industria minera entretanto esta formulación permite apenas trabajar con una sola función objetivo en su formulación. This paper introduces an innovative solution for devising a robust blasting plan that will presen... more This paper introduces an innovative solution for devising a robust blasting plan that will present consistently good fragmentation performance under highly uncertain environments. The analysis will be carried out using complexity analysis tools, a model-free approach to complex systems which is particularly well suited to the problem of finding non-deterministic dependencies between multiple variables. The study is backed-up by data from over 2,000 blast records from Brazilian mines and identifies what are the critical aspects of the system and how to manage the blasting plan to reduce their impact on its performance.
