The objective of this paper was to describe the beliefs and the level of knowledge about old age among formal caregivers of the elderly, verifying the relationship with the socio-demographic variables age, education and length of service in the job. The sample included 32 caregivers from two Long-Term Institutions. This is a correlational study, based on a cross-sectional survey. Results: in general, caregivers’ beliefs regarding old age were neutral, that is, neither positive nor negative; the knowledge on the topic were scarce, and the longer the time in the function, the more positive beliefs were manifested about the autonomy of the elderly (agency domain). It is believed that investment in the training of caregivers will increase the benefits both for the professional class (caregivers), yielding care skills improvement, and for the elderly themselves, by providing greater qualit...

That is because the emotional impact of the diagnosis and the psychological damage during treatment are significant, especially in patients undergoing antineoplastic chemotherapy, which exposes them to undesirable toxicities. Therefore, cancer patients need to marshal adaptive personal resources to deal with various types of discomfort, a coping process that can be associated with a reliance on religion, spirituality, or faith (religious/spiritual coping). Objective: to investigate the relationship between the use of religious/spiritual coping and the organic responses to the toxicities of chemotherapy. Method: This was an analytical, observational, cross-sectional, correlational study. using non-probability sampling, we selected 40 patients under treatment in the high complexity oncology unit of a university hospital. We applied a custom sociodemographic/health questio...

This is a descriptive research carried out in a Philanthropic ILPI, with five caregivers, through observation of care practices, as well as questionnaires and scales to evaluate the environment, beliefs and knowledge about the elderly. Results: caregivers with mean age of 48.2 years; low education level; inadequate care practices; low level of knowledge; negative view on autonomy and independence; precarious environment, physically and socially, with little interaction between the elderly and the bathroom as the worst evaluated. The data demonstrate the interrelationship between the subsystems, allowing to conclude that the subsystems of the concept of Developmental Niche can be used to discuss the developmental possibilities in the old age and in the context of ILPI. An extension of the study is suggested.

The psychology of work argues there are others reasons, maybe more important than money. It was investigated the influence of psychosocial factors in the decision of returning to job from 217 retired (140 Male; 77 Female), between 40 and 82 years old. Results show that the main reason is the need to feel productive. These found support the literature that claims the importance of the work to constitution of the identity.

How is the media addressing elderly suicide? And what does the news about elderly suicide tell us... more How is the media addressing elderly suicide? And what does the news about elderly suicide tell us? These were the questions which guided this reflection, addressing the news about elderly suicide published on Brazilian media from April 2010 to April 2013. We have noticed that the word ̈suicide” – that until recently “should not be mentioned” by the media – appears in most of the news, both in its headlines and inside the texts, showing that suicide, as a public health issue, moves from the private field to occupy and compose the public space. We found out that the main risk situations that lead seniors to commit an extreme communication gesture resulted from the effects of recessive economic politics, as well as life extension without dignity in view of the fear of dependence and causing trouble to other people. Such situations indicate the need of developing and strengthening social support networks. Keywords: media, elderly, suicide, risks, social support.
