However, in what we can call "narrative turn", the moral justifications for first-person perspectives are not always evident. In this paper, I explore the boundaries of epistemic relevance regarding the role that subjective accounts and experiences play in the critique of injustice. For that, I start by inverting the question of objectivity in the critique considering the particularity of different experiences. The issue, in this case, is the position from where philosophers speak in their attempts to describe experiences of suffering. With regards to first-person standpoint, the question that is at stake is whether philosophers are capable of describing others' experiences. In these terms, how can we share experiences of injustice after all? Next, I argue that there ought to be, in the debate, a distinction between two dimensions of justice. According to usual distinctions of "first-and second-order" approaches, I insist that theoretical claims related to the narrative turn refer to demands of first-order justice: it is about moral recognition of individuals' epistemic claims, opening to the possibility to confront defective notions of universality and blind spots in theories of justice. However, these claims do not have justification criteria themselves, requiring, thus, normative dependencies which are external to experiences-these are situated in second-order justice. I argue, then, that this model has the advantage of incorporating the insights of decolonial theories without neglecting the potential for the critique of injustice.

The main normative question that the author discusses here is how far it is possible – if it’s the case at all – to move beyond the basic structure of nation-linked patriotic feeling to solidarity as a transnational political emotion. He divides his argument into two steps. First, he analyzes how the concept of constitutional patriotism could be reframed around the contours of post-national contexts. He suggests that Hegel’s concept of patriotism as a political disposition can contribute to a transnational framework. In a second step, the author discusses solidarity as a transnational political emotion, arguing that one should have in view both its formative process and its contingencies in order to understand the institutional and symbolic mediation of affective contents of social praxis.

I develop my argument in three steps. First, I briefly present Fraser’s critique on Honneth. As a second step, I point out some ambiguities of an immanent interpretation of social claims having in mind two examples widely discussed by Fraser: the relation between feminism and capitalism, and the constitution of transnational public spheres. I shall argue that there is a permanent tension in the theoretical proposal of what we can call an affective content of social practices, in which the Fraser and Honneth’s approaches could be viewed not only as antagonistic, but also as complementary. From this argument, I conclude with a brief mention of what I call a critique of affects. I shall recover the idea of social grammar with a double aim: from a descriptive perspective, to show the limits and ambiguities of the articulation of sentiments and subjective experiences; and, on its normative aspect, to grasp a possible institutional framework of formation of affects.

sea circunscrito a condiciones socialmente mediadas.

I also want to demonstrate the difficulties associated with dealing with the pluralism of beliefs and public scrutiny, opening up the space for a form of epistemic “scuba diving”, which can be understood as a variant of the radicalization of freedom as non-coercion. This is where the individual ends up seeing social institutions (science, media, etc.) merely as sources of restrictions to their freedom, meaning the game of intersubjective validation – or the very space of public debate – has failed, which threatens democracies in a number of ways, including epistemically. I will defend the idea that instead of choosing a liberal answer for this problem – both in terms of a strict distinction between public and private and oriented by a normative conception of rationality – we can find in the concept of freedom as social cooperation a promising way of thinking, which I call an intrinsically social education of democratic affects. This encompasses finding a reciprocal dependence between education and democracy; on the one hand, this involves showing that these affects can normatively contribute to the formation of democracy and on the other, it includes discussing that such formative processes unfold through social practices themselves.

This is where the individual ends up seeing social institutions (science, media, etc.) mere- ly as sources of restrictions to their freedom, meaning the game of intersubjective validation – or the very space of public debate – has failed, which threatens democracies in a number of ways, including epistemically.2 I will defend the idea that instead of choosing a liberal answer for this problem – both in terms of a strict distinction between public and private and oriented by a normative conception of rationality – we can find in the concept of freedom as social cooperation a promising way of thinking, which I call an intrinsically social education of democratic affects. This encompasses finding a reciprocal dependence between education and democracy; on the one hand, this involves showing that these affects can normatively contribute to the formation of democracy and on the other, it includes discussing that such formative processes unfold through social practices themselves.

It argues that rather than facing a crisis, the humanities occupies an ambivalent place where it has gone through a process of expansion marked by two features, privatization and professionalization. Relying on data from the Ministry of Education’s Annual Higher Education Census, the chapter shows how these two features, rather than being specific to the humanities, are an outgrowth of structural fragilities of higher education in Brazil as whole.

sea circunscrito a condiciones socialmente mediadas.
