This monograph on Baroque Culture and Art reflects on the statute of religious imagery in the Council of Trent (1545-1563), during the process of reformation of Catholic Church. The item On the invocation, worship and relics of the saints and of holy images of its session XXV, held in 1563, regards the theological debate on the imagery issue before the 16th century and perceives the resumption of recurring arguments by conciliar priests due to the emergence of a heavy criticism to the Catholic Church. Important issues on the legitimacy of the use of images by the Church are highlighted, such as the representation of the invisible, the worship of sacred painting and, furthermore, inconoclasm, as well as its role in the teaching of the congreagation, as it sets in their memories the sacred narratives and the examples of Christ and the saints.
