Abstract: Included in Darwinian epistemology for research of the arts, the recent evolutionary science approach to narrative studies aims to answer some questions previously abandoned within the humanities. In this volume dedicated to the relation between literary theory and the theory of evolution, our contribution will be to provide a perspective of linguistic pragmatics, seeking evidence that recent advances in the sciences of language, cognition and communication can provide a better understanding of the narrative phenomena that could favor the naturalistic investigation of narratives.

Taking point from Dan Sperber's assumption that an idea gets its power of dissemination from the attractiveness within it, we try to analyze the concurrent dissemination of organizational discourses that, at first evaluation, have not enough attractiveness to be disseminated by the work force. The central question arises from the fact that organizational discourses are frequently of limited interpretation and seeking for subjection and control of the worker that, nonetheless, still works for the spreading of said discourses. Thus, the hypothesis proposes the organizational discourse as a carrier of alternative relevance: the relevance of maintaining the job – for instance – forcing the self-realization as a marginal thought or desire for the worker. In this mind-frame, the subjection can be thought from a cognitive perspective, and the employee could be seen as a thinking being, as a chooser; he thinks, take risks, weights decisions and actions, aiming for the maintenance or alteration of his social status in the group.

This dissertation was conceived as a theoretical research about the relationship between musical and verbal representations. For this purpose, our argumentation relied on an approach that we called as relevant-theoretical. We described this bias as a convergence between two theories: the relevance theory (SPERBER & WILSON, 1993, 1995, 2005) and the epidemiology of representations (SPERBER, 1996, 2000). These concepts are complementary, as both are articulated from a cognitive perspective on the human's cultural behaviors. Moreover, both theories reject the traditional model of the humanities to the communicative phenomenon, whereby the communicative meanings derive from process of encoding/decoding of information. In this work, we described how relevance is a cognitive concept required not only to an adequate theorizing on human communication, but also so to understand it as a cultural event. In the first chapter, we demonstrate how this theoretical path is the result of a posture of naturalization of the field of studies on the linguistic behavior. To this end, the computational generative approach (CHOMSKY, 1957), the modular theory of mind (FODOR, 1983) and an evolutionary conception of cognition (COSMIDES & TOOBY, 1987) are seen as crucial scientific developments that leaded to an articulation of a relevant-theoretical bias. In the second chapter, our attention falls on the models of cultural transmission. In particular, we demonstrated that the social sciences passively accept that psychological factors do not influence the theoretical description of our cultural behaviors. We rely on arguments from evolutionary psychology (PINKER, 2004) and pragmatics (SPERBER, 1996) to propose our account in favor of a concept for the massive modularity of mind, which allows us to explain human cultural diversity, without giving up an innate theory of mind. In the third chapter, we described the verbal and musical phenomena as culturally communicative. According to our argument, culture must be understood as an emergent system resulting from psychological microprocesses that entail physically structured macroprocesses. Therefore, we think there are evidences that, even the human musicality being unable to result in semantic properties, musical sounds are communicative language because, at the individual range, they can be interpreted as demonstrations of communicative intentions culturally recognizable. Therefore, (mental or public) verbal representations are considered as tools to build the cognitive environments, enabling those involved in the communication process to act so as to disseminate in a cultural way the musical representations (mental or public). Thus, we considered the theoretical bias here pointed out as relevant to understanding how musical representations are distributed, as well as psychological manifestations as in explicit statements. This makes plausible the assumption that music is communicative by means of micro and macro processes of representative spreading. Finally, we argue that the concept of cultural attraction is a key epidemiological factor, besides being more appropriate to the cultural phenomenon than a description of social processes of replication of meanings contained in codes.

We treat things in the world as artifacts and tools, changing and adapting the environment to our needs. In such sense, the inherent creative characteristic of communication seems to play a role in the capacity of generation and experimentation of social and cultural facts. This work offers a naturalistic conception on the formal variation and its functionality in cultural artifacts. We propose an evolutionary conception to explain the cognitive mechanisms involved in cultural activity. We argue that the observable diversity in cultural behavior manifestations emerges from intention attribution when one recognizes formal (structural) properties and its potential relevant properties. In this sense, the naturalistic bias makes evident that neither form nor function can prevail in causation of cultural diversity, considering that both formal and functional properties exert crucial roles in cultural distribution. generalizado da cognição se deve a um valor evolutivo: tendemos a maximizar nossos esforços cognitivos

caracterizam a criatividade inerente a fenômenos culturais.

technologies. We treat things in the world as artifacts and tools, changing and adapting the environment
to our needs. In such sense, the inherent creative characteristic of communication seems to play a role in
the capacity of generation and experimentation of social and cultural facts. This work offers a
naturalistic conception on the formal variation and its functionality in cultural artifacts. We propose an
evolutionary conception to explain the cognitive mechanisms involved in cultural activity. We argue that
the observable diversity in cultural behavior manifestations emerges from intention attribution when one
recognizes formal (structural) properties and its potential relevant properties. In this sense, the
naturalistic bias makes evident that neither form nor function can prevail in causation of cultural
diversity, considering that both formal and functional properties exert crucial roles in cultural
distribution.

Therefore, we think there are evidences that, even the human musicality being unable to
result in semantic properties, musical sounds are communicative language because, at the individual range, they can be interpreted as demonstrations of communicative intentions culturally recognizable.
