Devouring the carcass: counter cooking and alternative diets in animal feed Bernardo Lewgoy UFRGS Caetano Sordi UFSC : TThe emergence of alternative diets has crossed the species barrier and is now a phenomenon that is also observed in the field of animal nutrition. Between criticisms of the pet food industry and radical proposals for the "vegetarianization" of domestic animals, we identify a wide field of lay and professional controversies that this article intends to map. We also observe changes in sensitivity, representations, and market realities related to both livestock and pet animals. While the former are increasingly understood as productive machines, the latter are the object of hypersubjectivation that is reflected in products that are increasingly distant from mere "nutrition" (organic sourcing, subsistence) and closer to "feeding" (food carrying meaning and status). The article reconstructs this universe based on two critical events that exposed the globalized intricacies of the large sociotechnical network of animal feed: the outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (Mad Cow Disease) in the 1990s in Europe, and the massive pet food recall of 2007 in the United States.

Based on the case of Porto Alegre-RS, we tried to show that there is a silencing of canine suffering in the evidence that public policies for Leishmaniasis are constituted only when the disease threatens human lives. Likewise, we show how coexistence policies are produced and lived much more from the civil initiative, almost always on the sidelines and even against the public policies designed and implemented by the State, when certain populations of dogs and humans are neglected by the public power.

We’ll analyze some examples of arguments showing that the reaction to the movements and propositions that criticize the thesis of the human exception, when seen from the scope of the discussion about the ethical status of the animals, are situated on a more skeptical plane than a properly confi dent one

Through the analysis of official documents, literature review, comments on judicial processes gathered from the press, and ethnography of the impacts of visceral leishmaniasis outbreak in Porto Alegre, this article aims to understand what is at stake in this controversy, considering its discursive aspects in the construction of moralities and biopolitical practices. The existence of two regimes of life governance in the management of canine reservoirs of visceral leishmaniasis is suggested: a thanatopolitical one, linked to the public power, and another emerging biosecurity device, linked to the pharmaceutical market and accessible only for private treatment.

Based on the notion of disaster capitalism, we examine how political and corporate agents have taken advantage of the health catastrophe to create a privileged space for simplifications and deregulation in this sector. According to our reasoning, they accelerate precarious work in the meat industry and amplify the harmful effects of agribusiness on local ecologies and global ecosystems. In light of this, we also emphasize the analytical potential that results from the intersection between the categories of syndemics and structural violence to displace the traditional analyses of risk groups and behaviors in highlighting environments and their agents.

Already known problems are industrial accidents, repetitive strain injury syndrome, working with contaminated waste, and immunological and psychiatric disorders. In addition, the industry is characterized by precarious work, racism and speciesism and the production of unhealthy ecologies. These feed emerging pathogens and collectively create a scene of chronic destruction that exploits and sickens people, animals and environments. In this article, we examine how in the current situation, triggered by the ominous activity of agribusiness, central Anthropocene themes are collapsing and repeating in new configurations the devastating historical, social, sanitary, and environmental conditions that have beset Brazil since colonial times is.

O autor sustenta que o conceito de aura, de Walter Benjamin, é ainda útil para pensar os nexos entre virtualização e velhas tecnologias como um exemplo dos problemas gerais discutidos. This paper raises some questions about the epistemology and the ontology of cyberspace, relating it to the realization of post-traditional ethnographies in virtual worlds. Related to this issue the author argues that Walter Benjamin`s concept of “aura” is still appropriate to analyse the links between virtualization and old technologies as an example of the general problems discussed in this paper

Author of more than 400 works, translated into several languages and an influential religious leader, the Spiritist medium was a religious leader whose repercussion was greater than the religion he represented and who, therefore, does not allow himself to be caught in simplifications. Through the medium from Minas Gerais, they parade some of the main issues that have challenged Brazilian society and culture in the last century, such as the formation of the State and National Identity since the Vargas age, the role of the Army and the Church in these scenarios and the relationship of dispute and syncretism with the brazilian catholicism.
