Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar os projetos para a produção de energia elétrica no rio Itajaí-Açú, em Santa Catarina. No último quartel do século XIX, indústrias como a Hering e a Karsten iniciaram sua produção utilizando-se da energia hidráulica produzida na região do Testo Salto. Nas décadas seguintes, empresas como a Empresa Eletricidade do Salto e a Empresa Força e Luz ratificaram o potencial hidrelétrico do vale do Itajaí com a construção de usinas hidrelétricas. Transformando o rio, até então conhecido pelas enchentes, em um aliado para o desenvolvimento da cidade.

This article aims to analyse the floods of the River Itajaí-Açú, specifically in
the city of Blumenau, and to observe how the city’s urban growth contributed to a rise in the incidences of flooding and the aggravation of their consequences. Located in the Itajaí valley (SC) Blumenau was founded in 1850 by German settlers and its history has been marked by the frequent floods caused by the river rising. In the first few years, the floods affected the subsistence agriculture and the few houses erected by the river banks. In the following decades, however, with the growth in population and the city’s industrial development, great floods became more frequent, and what were formerly natural events became large-scale environmental disasters. With the number of dead and profound impacts to the economy, the Blumenau floods of the 20th century gained centre space in national newspapers, modified the city’s routine and ended up becoming a part of it.
