Family caregivers burden has been described by international researches. In Brazil very few studies investigated familia burden with validated scales, perhaps due to the restrict availability of scales to measure this construct. The present study examined the reliability of the Brazilian version of the Family Burden Interview Schedule. METHOD:Scale reliability was assessed through its internal consistency and temporal stability. A sample of 243 family caregivers of psychiatric patients attending public outpatient services were interviewed with the scale. Socio-demographic data were collected with a standardized form. A sub-sample of 42 relatives participated in a re-test, after 3 weeks, for assessment of the scale temporal stability. RESULTS:Cronbach alpha coefficients ranged from 0.58 to 0.90 for global and domains scores. Pearson correlation coefficients and intra-class correlation coefficients for test and retest ranged from 0.54 to 0.90. DISCUSSION:Results for internal consistency were similar to the original scale. Four subscales presented alpha coefficients superior to the original ones. The temporal stability cannot be compared because this analysis was not performed for the original scale. CONCLUSION:The Brazilian version of the scale had good psychometric properties of temporal stability and internal consistency.

Two trained judges have observed them interacting with trained partners in 4 negative assertion role-play situations, regarding giving and receiving criticism, which were videotaped. Types of situations and gender of partners were varied during the procedure. Results indicated the clinical group failed to alternate its speech with its partners more often than the non-clinical group. The clinical group showed greater frequency of very short verbal or vocal responses to their partners interactions. The content of their responses were more totally or partially bizarre. Both groups presented more disruptions regarding the timing of their responses in situations where they were receiving rather then giving criticism. Both groups gave longer verbal responses to male rather than female partners. These results in general replicated data from others researchers and indicated the specific dimensions of interaction behavior need to be addressed in social skills training for psychiatric patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study describes the family caregivers' objective and subjective burden and identified the most affected domains of their lives. METHODS: Descriptive study using a sample of 150 family caregiversofpsychiatricpatients, randomly selected from Cersamsin Belo Horizonte (MG), Brazil. It was applied a Family Burden Interview Schedule (FBIS-BR) and a standardized clinic and socio-demographic data questionnaire. RESULTS: Most caregivers presented high objective burden related to frequent daily assistance of patients and a high subjective burden related to worries about the patients, feeling of burden in supervising their problematic behaviors and perception of permanent impact in their social and professional lives. The daily alterations in the routine had not caused objective burden to the caregivers. The average of monthly expenses with patients was of R$ 153.5. CONCLUSIONS: Results confirmed data from international research with the same target population and from Brazilians studies with caregivers of old patients with depression or dementia. Results obtained in the present research indicated that it is necessary to develop intervention programs for information, support and orientation of family caregivers.

It was realized a search in electronic databases SciELO and BVS-Psi, using the keywords psychological assessment, psychological tests and psychological testing. 333 articles were selected, and were analyzed in the categories divulgation, speech, topics, authors and methodology. The results showed an increase in scientific production in recent years, difficulties in locating the articles in the databases online, predominance of empirical work, related to instruments, especially the psychological tests and majority of single authors and women authors.
This study investigated the predictors of subjective burden for families of psychiatric patients.... more This study investigated the predictors of subjective burden for families of psychiatric patients. We interviewed 150 relatives of patients randomly selected in four mental health care services in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Subjects were interviewed with the Family Burden Interview Schedule (FBIS-BR) and a standardized socio-demographic questionnaire. Variables were grouped into thematic categories and separately analyzed to determine the relative importance of predictive factors. The results showed that subjective burden is influenced by objective burden and by factors related to the patient's clinical condition, the caregiver's and patient's living and health conditions and financial status, and increased demand for information on mental illness. Subjective burden was less when the caregiver practiced leisure and religious activities, publicly admitted to being the caregiver of a psychiatric patient, and had positive feelings toward the patient. The findings highlight the need to include family follow-up in the community model for psychiatric care.
