We place the atmospheric phenomena in the area called ‘calms and tornadoes’ on Edmund Halley’s world map (1686). The first Cartography of the Sargasso Sea dates back to 1700, west and south of the Azores, passing through the island of Madeira to the Canary Islands. We explain, in light of current meteorology, the relationship between the Atlantic zone of calms and tornadoes and that of the Sargasso Sea, as well as scientifically interpreting the other phenomena reported at the time. This study proved to be useful for new investigations.

Looking for alternatives that might enable the diversification of agricultural activities in areas of steep topography appears the possibility of the sheep breeding mixed with orchards established. This system was subjected to research that shows some interest from farmers. To better support their real possibilities, the authors aimed to identify and quantify the species of wild plants, present in a guava trees orchard that may offer potential forage for sheep. It was found 13 species belonging to six botanical families that was estimated 10,32 t ha -1 MS available for the feeding of sheep.

Three lots of rheas were maintained at poultry housing. The first one under the natural brightness of Viçosa (20º45'S); the second received 13h30min of luminosity per day (5:15am to 6:45pm) and the third lot received 16h30min of luminosity per day (3:45am to 8:15pm), starting in the month of April, with three fluorescent lamps of 20W/100m2. The complete separation of the lots was done by demarcation walls of black plastic covered by metallic fence. To avoid injuries caused by agonistic behavior in high density, each lot of seven rheas was constituted of sub lots 'A' and 'B', separated by half-walls. In 'A' there were a male and three females and in 'B' a male and two females. Each sub lot occupied 75m2 and each individual was identified by a colored collar. The adaptation to the gradual increase of daylight in lots 2 and 3 lasted six days. Males and femal...

For millions of people in this region the goat production helps to survive and it’s an alternative economy in backlands, justifying the study of those herds. A total of 497 samples (23 herds) of goat blood from the state of Ceará were analyzed for Hemoglobin (Hb) regarding genetic variability. The analyses were performed using the isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel. All Hb knolled alleles were present with the following frequencies among herds: HbA 0.53 to 1.0; HbB 0 to 0.37, HBD 0 to 0.20; HbE 0 to 0.16. The HbA allele was observed in all herds and with more frequency than others. It was also detected the HbC allele, which only appeared in anemic animals.

The arriving of farm animals in Brazil started in 1534 in São Vicente (SP), followed by introduction in Recife (PE) and Salvador (BA). The origins are Portugal, Cape Verde islands and, in the 18th century from Spain through Rio de la Plata. There was no introduction of horse, small neither big ruminants by French nor Dutch settlers. Horses were a currency in the slave trade but usually there were no animals on the slave ship coming to Brazil. African chicken could come intermediated by Iberia. The hair sheep found nowadays in the Northeast of Brazil is probably from those of short hair, long and thin tail coming from Guinea (Sudan) introduced among 1550 and 1600 and those of short hair and long and thin tail coming from Angola (Bantu) introduced among 1600 and 1650. The Moorish cattle (Mauritania and north of Senegal) and their crosses with the European cattle would be introduced from Cape Verde archipelago, as well as the Sahel...

Captive breeding is technically viable alternative, it may be used as a conservationist strategy, generating biological data from these animals, integrating environmental awareness and increasing a number of specimens, sometimes of rare species. Brazil counts on legal endorsement for captive breeding of its wild fauna, but data about distribution of these breeders are scarce. It was aimed in this study to relate the economy influence over the distribution of commercial, scientific and conservationist legal breeders in national territory. To concern that, the municipality of the breeder was related to the profile of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in his municipality and the amount of breeding registers account by great Brazilian region. It was used records from fauna breeders between 1976 and 2001, available from the Brazilian Environmental and Renewable Natural Resources Institute ...

The analyses were made using the zymogram method in agar-gel for XP, PEPB and ACP1, in different buffers. For PGM, CAII and ESD it was used as support starch-agar gel. The protein systems: PEPB, ACP1, CAII and PGM was monomorphic in all of the analyzed samples. The systems ESD and XP was polymorphic with 2 alleles each. For the system ESD the frequency of the allele ESD*1 varied from 0.13 to 0.80 and the frequency of the allele ESD*2 varied from 0.20 to 0.87. For the system XP, the frequencies of the alleles varied for XP*1 from 0.29 to 0.83 and XP*2 from 0.17 to 0.71. Considering the 23 herds together, the observed heterozygosity (Ho) for ESD was of 0.44 and the expected one (He) was of 0.50. For XP Ho=0.63 and He=0.49. Considering the 6 studied loci, Ho was 0.18 and He was 0.17.

Among them, ostrich (Struthio camelus), greater rhea (Rhea americana) and emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) have zoo technical interest. The capture and the physical contention of these ratites are made, usually, for periods of short duration for handling practices. The enclosing of them is unviable in spaces where they cannot move around, therefore under these circumstances they become anxious and struggle. On the other hand, the total collection of excrete, usually employed in nutrition assays for domestic species, is done in metabolic cages or cages of digestibility assays. In the impossibility of maintaining ratites in contention cages for the necessary time to the experiments, we realized a pre-experimentation where a plastic bag was fixated, with adhesive ribbon, to the abdomen of each rhea for total excrete collection. These bags allowed the rheas to move freely, but they didn't propitiate the fixation for appropriate time to the experimentation. So, it was necessary the development of a waterproof bag-diaper that was used, with success, in experiments. This bag-diaper is made of plastic materials sold in meters, cut with mold under measure and of anatomical format, which parts are welded by a heat solder. It’s attached to the body of the bird through a nylon belt with a velcro bolt, dressing them under the wings. A patent request, number PI0502780-2, was deposited by the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the Banco de Patentes do Centro de Documentação e Informação Tecnológica (Bank of Patents of the Center of Documentation and Technological Information) of the Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Intelectual (National Institute of Intellectual Property), available in: http://pesquisa.inpi.gov.br.
