Toch is tijd voor de ervaring van kunstwerken een cruciaal element. Zo duren mooie liedjes nooit lang, maar voor theater ligt dat helemaal anders. Hoe langer theater duurt, hoe intensiever vaak de ervaring. Laat Jan Fabre zijn huzarenstuk Mount Olympus daarom 24u doorgaan? Het is vooral zijn unieke spel met tijd, ritme en lichamelijkheid dat je als kijker helemaal van de wijzers brengt. Time is Money. In een theatervoorstelling wordt van de toeschouwer niet alleen verwacht dat hij betaalt voor een bepaald tijdsframe aan toneel, hij offert binnen dat frame ook al zijn tijd op aan alleen maar de voorstelling zelf, zonder andere bezigheid. De toeschouwer is zelf volstrekt onproductief en spendeert zijn kostbare vrije tijd geheel vrijwillig aan het stuk. De meeste mensen gaan met andere woorden naar theater om te ontspannen, maar dat blijft een totaal andere ervaring dan thuis een telenovelle of een film bekijken. De toeschouwer moet zich met zijn lichaam, en liefst ook met een aandachtige geest, naar het theatergebouw begeven. Eens hij in de zaal zit, wordt hij geacht zijn telefoon uit te schakelen en zich stil te houden. Zijn gezichtsveld wordt verduisterd tot de verlichte scène voor hem. Als in een tunnel richt de focus van het hele publiek zich op de niet-bestaande wereld die daar wordt opgevoerd. Weg glijdt het bewustzijn van de reële wereld waarin ze zich nog wel bevinden, maar niet meer interageren. Op die manier is theater steeds een kortstondige ontsnapping aan de dagelijkse realiteit, waarin tijd en ruimte relatiever worden en het publiek even bewust vergeet dat wat zich voor hen afspeelt, niet echt is. Zo luidt de klassieke versie van toneel. Welnu, wat met Mount Olympus – To Glorify the Cult of Tragedy, a 24 hour Performance? Jan Fabre levert met deze Dionysische stroom van herkenbare beelden uit zijn hele oeuvre een indrukwekkend intens theaterstuk af, zowel voor zijn bijna dertig spelers als voor de zaal. Alle voorgenoemde aannames over het theater worden op zijn kop gezet, uitvergroot of doorprikt. Toch blijft het absoluut theater: Mount Olympus blijft de scheiding tussen scène en publiek respecteren, en houdt zijn uitzinnigheid strikt binnen de grenzen van het podium. De toeschouwer mag dan misschien wel verlangen er deel van uit te maken, hij kan op geen enkel moment betrokken raken bij de excessen die hij ziet. Die betrokkenheid creëert Fabre heel anders: met de tijd mee. Tussen slapen en waken Vele toeschouwers zullen het te horen gekregen hebben: 'Vierentwintig uur theater, dat moet je maar zien zitten!' of 'Hoe kan je dat nu nog ontspannend noemen?' Mount Olympus ís dan ook niet ontspannend. Het vraagt van het publiek juist een niet te onderschatten inspanning. De voorstelling uitkijken is heel nadrukkelijk vermoeiend. Met die bewuste keuze is Fabre niet aan zijn proefstuk toe. Eerder al rekte hij zijn podiumwerk uit tot 8 uur in Het is theater zoals te verwachten en te voorzien was (1982) en tot 4,5 uur in De Macht der Theaterlijke Dwaasheden (1984). Wat is Mount Olympus dan meer dan de overtreffende trap? Een mediatiek evenement ter meerder eer en glorie van Fabres zelfvermeende cultstatus, zullen sceptici beweren. Maar die indruk gaat veel te makkelijk voorbij aan de artistieke meerwaarde van een etmaal theater.

Ze verrijkt de beleving van de gebruikers van die ruimte, en brengt een vruchtbare dialoog op gang tussen alle belanghebbende partijen – overheden, bouwheren, architec-ten, kunstenaars en publiek. Althans, in theorie. Want al te vaak blijven zulke projecten een verplicht nummer-tje, zonder veel visie of ambitie. Om kunst eindelijk écht te integreren in de publieke ruimte, moet het wetge-vende kader grondig worden hervormd, en moeten architecten en bouwheren worden uitgedaagd om de kruis-bestuiving met volle goesting te omarmen. <tekst> Om het te hebben over kunst in de (semi)publieke ruimte, is het belangrijk aan te stippen hoe divers enerzijds het kunstenveld en anderzijds de verschijningsvormen van publieke ruimte zijn. Beeldende kunst is een uiterst dynamisch gegeven geworden, dat eender welke vorm kan aannemen, en zelfs geen enkele fysieke verschijning meer hoeft te hebben‑. Publieke ruimte is net zo: het scala aan nuances dat zich tussen volledig publiek terrein 1 en volstrekt private ruimte bevindt, is eindeloos. De condities waarin de kunstprojecten moeten bestaan, zijn bijgevolg ook werelden apart. Van de eerder intieme sfeer in een woonzorgcentrum tot een druk, stedelijk plein: de sociale randvoorwaarden alleen al maken beide interventies onvergelijkbaar.
