The critical environmental dependency of soils is well-established yet to date soils have been undervalued and poorly recognised as cultural materials. MEMOLA has demonstrated that soils are an extensive cultural resource and form part of Europe’s rich cultural heritage. This brief stresses the need for a comprehensive European policy for soil protection and management that recognises the complex nature of soil and seeks to promote an awareness of soils as having a dual inheritance that stems from both cultural and natural processes. The Italian Soil Science Society (SISS) and the European Society for Soil Conservation (ESSC) collaborated in writing this policy brief and is supported by the UK Soil Association.

Traditional varieties are the best ambassadors of the landscape in which they are cultivated. Preserving them by intergenerational knowledge transfer may be a way to reactivate traditional agroecosystems creative cycles and to improve social and cultural resiliency. The brief also presents policy development recommendations to establish mechanisms and criteria to define its values and for their protection.

There are 155 plants used in etno-medicine. The etnofarmacobotanical use of spontaneous and cultivated taxa represents an ecosystem services provided by biodiversity in the traditional agricultural systems of this area.

The study focuses on four areas: Sierra Nevada(Spain), Monti di Trapani (Italy), Colli Euganei (Italy) and Vjosa Valley (Albania).

For this purpose, we organize initiatives, both for teachers as for students, allowing them to learn, investigate, create and provide information, data and related ideas in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge about Sierra Nevada cultural landscape.

... more Internet technologies offer a broad set of opportunities for archaeologists to share information and to involve the public in multiple ways in order to build historical narratives together. During the last decade, the Medieval Archaeological Research Group at the University of Padua conducted a research about medieval architectures and historical landscapes in Padua and its territory. At the same time as developing methodologies for recording, dating and understanding medieval architectures and historical landscapes, we have been interested in the communication of this complex information to the wider public in order to reach a wider community which can also be interested in collaborating in our research increasing in that way their social impact and future development.
The diversity of life is made up not only of the diversity of plants and animal species, habitats... more The diversity of life is made up not only of the diversity of plants and animal species, habitats and ecosystems, but also of the diversity of human cultures. These diversities interact with one another in complex ways and express the mutual adaptation between humans and the environment at local level. Sicilian traditional agro-ecosystems, due to the history of the territory and the resulting social and economic context, are configured in a heterogeneous mosaic rich in residual features of environmental value, which enhance the connectivity of the ecological network and support a high proportion of species that are rare or of conservation concern. As a case study we analyzed the characteristics of the cultural and natural landscape of the Madonie Mountains (Sicily), acknowledged as one of the most relevant biodiversity hotspots in the Mediterranean. In a G.I.S. environment, we created a digital naturalness grid map and a floristic map including extensive data collected in field. We measured landscape naturalness degree, using the Naturalness Evaluation Index, and analysed its relationship with plant species distribution. We produce evidence that the cultural processes that shape a traditional landscape can foster an amount of specific richness disproportionate to the area covered. The presence of even limited surfaces with remnant semi-natural vegetation cover, scattered within the agricultural land mosaic, positively affects biodiversity. Therefore, we suggest that environmental management plans and policies aimed at nature and biodiversity conservation should take into account not only natural and semi-natural habitats but also the key role of agro-ecosystems.

The aim of this paper is to present the preliminary results of the two first archaeological excavations carried out in Mojácar la Vieja (Mojácar, Almería). These interventions have shed light to the existence of a fortified settlement from Almoravid/Almohad period in which we have identified a defensive complex formed by two concentric enclosures with walls and a huge cistern, as well as domestic and manufacturing structures that shaped a permanent settlement.
