ABSTRACT The objective of this work is to know the form in which the physical and mechanical characteristics of a composite material made with news paper, hydrated lime, and alum, are affected by the manipulation of the proportions of their components and individual characteristics of these; in addition identifying the characteristics of the generated compound material that make it possible to be used like construction material. A design became of samples with a multitable model, and test samples were elaborated, to which tests based on ASTM norms were applied, consisting of: compression strenght, flexural strenght, density, humidity content, absorption, compressive strenght with saturation, and thermal conductivity. In the results it was observed that with greater amount of news paper a smaller thermal conductivity is obtained, but a greater absorption of water, and vice versa with the amount of hydrated lime; and the alum as additive increased some of the values of the characteristics and contributed to stabilize the mixtures, but had a proportion action limit. Even though it was hoped to have better results with the mixtures with greater content of news paper, existed extenuating like the resistance to compression or water absorption, that directed the selection of the type of mixture to one more apt for the required aim, and the possible uses of the same one like thermal insulating material in construction.
ABSTRACT Traditional and vernacular architecture, have received growing attention since recent decades in the research about sustainability of the built environment. The essential qualities of this type of buildings, place them as a reference of what can be environmentally coherent when we build and inhabit architectural spaces. Some of their outstanding qualities, regarding sustainability, are the use of local materials, their physical characteristics performing, their structural systems solutions and their shapes which have generated formal typologies; all these are elements that have a certain attachment to the canons of sustainability. Research on this issue has been often directed from a qualitative perspective to register cases of vernacular or traditional architecture and their characteristics, and how the inhabitants live inside. Subsequent studies combine qualitative and quantitative aspects, in order to deepen the investigation about the causes of the diversity of phenomena involved in these habitats.
adversas.
