Transmission loss can be reduced by installing reactive power compensation components. Installing the thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) in power system has been known to increase the voltage level in the system and hence reduce the system losses. This paper describes placement and sizing of FACTS devices based on Particle Swarm Optimization for minimization of transmission loss considering voltage profile and cost function. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is one of the artificial intelligent search approaches which have the potential in solving such a problem. In this study one of FACTS device is used as a scheme for transmission loss. For this study, TCSC is chosen as the compensation device. Validation through the implementation on the IEEE 30-bus system indicated that PSO is feasible to achieve the task. The simulation results are compared with those obtained from the Evolutionary Programming (EP) technique in the attempt to highlight its merit.

Therefore power system operation and stability become less safe due to unexpected congestion and voltage violations. In additional, new transmission line is considered one of the solutions to provide a stable operation it is more secure to the power system. However it is more expensive and time consuming which also need to address the political and environmental issues. One of the alternatives which can be employed is the use of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS). Because of this sophisticated tool is very suitable for non-linear system and easy for implementation, many researchers have taken initiative to formulate it according to their point of view. In the meantime, the electricity tracing techniques have also been developed through various theories, nevertheless, only transmission service pricing and electricity deregulation become the subjects of discussion when implementing it. In virtue of that, this paper proposes a new technique for locating the suitable load buses for the purpose of load shedding considering multi-contingencies, that is, by means of stability index tracing. The amount of load power to be shed is determined via a modified version of fuzzy system, which consists of improved membership functions by optimization algorithm. Experiment on IEEE 57-bus and 118-bus reliability test systems (RTS) validates the feasibility of the proposed technique for real system application.
