This study is designed to identify the relationship between the long case and the OSCE. There was a positive weak correlation between the diagnostic ability component of the long case and the diagnostic ability component of the OSCE (r= 0.165, p= 0.042). and a positive weak correlation between the total long case mark and the total OSCE mark (r=0.168, p= 0.039). The long case and the OSCE correlate poorly and the student's performance in one doesn’t predict the performance on the other.

The objective of this study was to determine the educational environment in a Malaysian medical school, aimed to face the diversity. This cross-sectional study was conducted utilising “Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure”, a validated instrument that contained 50 items rated 0-4 with a maximum 200 score under five sub-scales. Sub-scales were perceptions of: learning, teacher, academic-self, atmosphere and social-self. Respondents were 193 year-5 medical students of session 2011-2012, comprised of Malays, Chinese, Indians and Other ethnic-group. The overall mean score perceived by all ethnicity was 130/200 (65%). All sub-scales perceived >60% scores except social-self and atmosphere. The social-self sub-scale perceived the lowest score (53.57%) by the Other ethnic group while interestingly social-self also perceived highest (75%) by the Indians. Atmosphere sub-scale perceived a score of 5...

Simulation provides learners the opportunity for deliberate practice. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) is one of the promoter of Simulation-based medical education (SBME), conducting regularly train the trainer workshop aimed to increase the efficiency of learner. The objective of this paper is to provide an insight from the learners perspective on a SBME workshop. Methods: It was a pre and post-test design survey, done on a total of 21 participants of UKMMC who attended a 2-day train-the-trainer workshop on SBME held in April 2014 at Simulation Lab of Emergency Department. Participants were exposed to interactive-lectures, hands-on with scenario design-development using high fidelity simulator and trying out the scenario with simulation. Each simulation session lasted around 30 minutes, followed by a 15-minute debriefing and 10-minute didac...

Some differences exist in the training method of SPs for psychiatry examinations compared to other medical disciplines. This brief report highlights the challenges encountered in the training process and methods to overcome those challenges. A wellstructured, intensive training remains as one of the most important factors in ensuring standardization of SPs for psychiatric examinations.

It is crucial to review and evaluate the mentoring system in place in any given institution to identify potential issues. This study aimed to ascertain the perception of mentors and mentees towards mentoring system at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC). This cross-sectional study involved 382 UKMMC medical students from Year-2 to Year-5, and 35 UKMMC lecturers. Data were collected by sending validated questionnaires through Google Forms to all 819 students via the Facebook groups of UKM medical students. The questionnaires for mentors were distributed to all 78 lecturers through their respective emails. Both mentors and mentees showed positive perceptions towards the mentoring system with a total score of 110/144 (76%) and 51/64 (80%), respectively. Year-2 and Year-3 mentees showed higher perception compared to Year-4. Mentees supervised under pre-clin...

TBL starts with the students’ preparation, during which they study an advance assignment defined by the faculty and then participate in the readiness assurance process (RAP) to demonstrate knowledge. The RAP consists of a short individual test. This is followed by the same test taken in multiple teams with immediate feedback, the opportunity to appeal test questions, and then clarification of still difficult material. After the RAP, the remainder of the course is spent applying the content in the class to questions or problems via activities and case studies. Studies show that students’ performance improves and weaker students benefit more from TBL. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is a leading national public university in Malaysia and its medical faculty has adopted many small group approaches including problem-based learning (PBL) along with lecture se...

This study aims to determine both the effect of a medical programme on levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) medical students before and during the course. A study was conducted with 133 first-year medical students enrolled in the 2018/2019 academic session in UKM. Levels of depression, anxiety and stress were measured using a validated questionnaire—the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21)—at two different time intervals: during orientation week (time 0) and early in the second semester (time 1). The collected data undergo statistical assessment with Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis H Test using SPSS v25.0. The medical students comprised 25.6% (n = 34) males and 74.4% (n = 99) females. More than half were Malay (60.9%, n = 81), followed by Indian (18%, n ...
