WeB-CEPT which is the acronym for Web-Based Creating, Editing and Publishing Tool is a Content Creation Tool (CCT) that enables ESL teachers to create WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What'You-Get) HTML documents online and save them into an educational portal known as ELT-TReC (ELTOnline Teacher Resource Center) developed by the authors: The documents may contain simple text formatting, hyperlinks and images. The focus in this paper is on the collaborative use of SNS including the factors (variables of level of study, gender and academic performance) that might have influenced how SNS is used by Malaysian students. This focus is necessary as so far, no research have looked at these variables across the population of Malaysian university students. An online survey was carried out using convenience sampling and this returned a usable result set of N=16661. Frequency analysis revealed that 68.6% of respondents used SNS to collaborate with their peers, and more than half join study groups on SNS (57.5%) as well as course groups created by their lecturers (56.1%) at a high level of frequency; many reported using SNSs often/all the time for these purposes. Further analysis showed statistical significance for almost all the variable...

In contrast to patient-specific sources of information, mass media may potentially reach healthy people and help them avoid becoming part of the diabetes statistics. The study selected relevant samples from the Malaysian Diabetes Corpus and used an online tool to score and display their readability using Flesch Kinkaid Reading Ease (FKRE) as the main indicator. Result: The average readability for the materials is low at 49.6 FKRE, which may impede the uptake of information contained in the articles. Trend analysis reveals that there is not much variability in the years covered by the corpus with the articles from 2016 scoring better than other years. Feature analysis of articles with the best and worst readability indicates that medical practitioners may not be the best spokesperson to reach the public. It also indicates ...

Based on these findings, several technological features such as discussion tools, real-time audio-visual chat, personal knowledge construction and annotation tools were developed for the prototype in order for the system to cater to the reading strategies identified. The i-ELLS prototype presents a novel way for readers to interact with online textual materials that can be personalized and interacted with in order to assist with literacy and comprehension. It is also designed for collaborative activities in order to maximize the benefits of online environments. It is currently being used in a postgraduate teaching and learning context at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This paper reports on the development as well as the students’ overall evaluation ...

This article was conducted as part of a pilot study on qualitative data collection into reading of Science and Technology hypertexts that focuses on reading and navigational strategies of five university students enrolled in undergraduate Engineering programs. It presents the application of iREAD; Interactive Reading for Academic Disciplines that integrates various e-literacy tools to facilitate reading of academic hypertexts. Student's participation was within iREAD through the use of annotation tool and discussion forum. The two-phased data collection was conducted qualitatively through semi-structured interviews, screen records, and retrospective interviews. The results show that the participants mainly used a global reading strategy, serial, and mixed overview navigational strategies in the online reading environment. In additio...

conducted in the country to evaluate the level of diffusion of these sites. A nation-wide survey was conducted
during two months to evaluate the membership, usage pattern, and perceptions of social networking sites among
6498 Malaysian university students. This article provides descriptive statistics and interprets the results in light
of current literature and similar surveys conducted in other countries. Results revealed that a large majority of
students were members of Facebook which they used on a daily basis mostly, but not exclusively to connect with
their friends. The article concludes with opportunities to include such sites in formal and informal learning.
